Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a question of mine please.

So I currently live in a different state (not Ga), and was thinking about applying to some schools in GA. If I could get a GA driver's license, would I be considered a GA resident? For example, can I mark GA as my residency on AMCAS? (however, I'll still be living in my state and working in my state...)

But I could have a house that I rent in GA...

Basically, I just want to know what I have to do to qualify as a GA resident. Whether it is just getting a driver's license? Or do I have to actually do other things as well.

Thanks for any help with this.

I believe most states you have to be living and working in a state for at least year before applying. Plus getting a license in a new state you have to already have some sort of residence there in order to apply so you know they can put that address on your license. Each state varies so I'd double check GA resident requirements.

From UGA's Petition for Classification as In-State for Tuition Purposes:

Category A: An independent student who has established and maintained legal domicile in the State of Georgia for a period of at least 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the first day of classes for the term. It is presumed that no student shall have gained or acquired in-state classification while attending any postsecondary educational institution in this state without clear evidence of having established domicile in Georgia for purposes other than attending a postsecondary educational institution in this state.

I imagine most postsecondary schools have this policy.

It varies from school to school, but yeah, generally you have to live and work in the state 12 months prior to matriculation. Some allow you to become a resident for tuition purposes after starting school, others don't (it would seem that UGA is one that doesn't).

On AMCAS, you can put whatever the heck you want. But state schools have some sort of vetting process to determine whether you are actually an IS resident or not.

Thanks for the helpful replies so far.

I am mostly asking not because I want the IS tuition. I am more worried about the schools that are super OOS un-friendly/will only take GA residents.

Thus, I may be able to get a GA DL because I have family that lives in Ga, and use their house as my address to apply for a Ga DL, but I will still be working and living in my home state until I get accepted into a school?

Does that make sense?

Thanks again

What is it about Georgia that makes you really want to go to those schools over other schools in the state you are living or that are OOS friendly?

Bad MCAT score.

Probably won't get into my state's school, but have a decent shot at some of the lower tier schools in GA
