According to the 2000 edition of the AMA Physician characteristics, 14.3% of surgeons in the U.S. are female (21,906 of the 153,417 surgeons). Women are least represented in Urology (2.9% of all urologists) and most represented in Ob/Gyn (32.6%), Ophthalmology (13.7%), and General Surgery (9.5%).
