simsee,

Listen to who you want-----however, realize you are a great candidate. PEOPLE please stop with this gpa, DAT, I'm this, I'm that, attitude!!!!! ALL the dental student just simply laugh. Believe me, with passion combined with an average DAT/GPA----you have a fighting chance. My advice is be different. Do something, be something above the norm. Obviously, you have to be competitive, however, be yourself, be unique, be passionate, and just do it. If you fail----stick with it------persistence beats resistance.

hey guys,
I don't want to keep rambling about myself on this thread, but I just did want to THANK many of you on here for being so supportive! Its great that many of predents can help each other out and keep us upbeat! Good luck everyone!!!

Wow, a 30 on the PAT! I would like to have studied with this guy! What that tells me is that his months before the DAT must have been spent locked in a shed in the woods painting and counting cubes. Anyone that is dedicated enough to do paper folding exercises while their friends play Playstation gets my vote. After two or three "hole-punch" problems, my motivation was already a bit lacking.

Budfrog,
I would really appreciate your opinion about Ohio State. What was that you liked or disliked about the school and the interview process.Any one else feel free to join.
Thanks.

Tak-
My experience at Ohio State was not horrible, but there were certain aspects of the school that I did not feel matched up competitively with other schools I interviewed at. Actually, I felt that my interview at OSU was probably my best out og the five I had. OSU did not seem to be as strong academically as I would have liked. In addition, when I asked how students fared on board scores from OSU, no one would give me a direct answer. This suggested to me that they were not necessarily worth bragging about. They said that "the scores are consistently improving for the last few years" whatever that means. The clinic was not especially impressive to me and it was very obvious that students had to "battle" for chair time. The clinics were not very large and the large class size made the problem worse. OSU had some research opportunities although not as many as CWRU. THe libraries and preclinic labs were just about the same as every other school. They have a very nice lunch set up for you on the interview day and really go out of their way to make everything especially nice. Also, they give you a few gifts on your way out as a "souvenir" i guess. One of the factors that I found to be especially unfavorable was the fact that they will not let you know about scholarships until you commit to attending the school. Other schools let me know within a few days of the acceptance letter and I wasn't willing to waste money on the down payment just to see what they were willing to give me. One very positive note is their admissions director, MIchael Rowland. He was by far one of the nicest people I met and he knew everyone at the interview and that had applied by name. He came right up to me prior to the events for the day starting and said hello and knew my name and everything about me. He really does a great job down there. I know I kinda rambled a little but I hope this helps you. If you have any other specific questions please feel free to ask.

Simseema

Your stats have definitely improved and that shows your determination. You are doing good by retaking the DAT, the higher, the better. If you don't mind me asking, what else did you write in your essay. The reason in asking such is that I took a prehealth professions course that required students to write their essay. An admissions officer told us that if your whole essay is spent explaining your faults, it would not leave a good impression. I was told you could mention grades very briefly with showing how you improved, but then move on to activities that demonstrate to them that you have what it takes. If you would be interested in any ideas, I would be more than willing to help. 🙂

JonR

Can you share some your techniques that you successfully used on the PAT... it would be a great service... thanks in advance 🙂

Going to UT-Houston in August!!!!

Good Luck to all the predents applying for 2003. My advice to you would be to apply as early as possible, especially if you have a low gpa like I did. I think what helped me apply as early as I did was to have my essay written at least a month before the AADSAS app is available online. Also, I made sure my professors were aware of the deadlines for sending in their letters...I requested them to be sent ASAP to be received by the schools in July).
I applied as a non-traditional student. I am 25 and graduated in May 1998 with a Biology degree. I shadowed and worked for a dentist for a while before and after taking the DAT in March 2001. Since I was pre-med in college and had applied to med school two years earlier, the shadowing helped to show my committment to becoming a dentist.
In retrospect, I think I applied to too many schools. I would not have chosen the public schools in states where I am not a resident in. The best source to find where to apply based on your own stats is the ADEA's Guide to Dental Schools. I highly recommend it!

Please try to keep this thread as a STATS thread, feel free to debate with a new thread on issues!! Much appreciated! 😎

Toothfairy,

Thanks for your offer. I would LOVE to hear some advice about my essay. The first time I applied, I mentioned stuff about me, being a little off-track my first few years of school, and then went on to talk about what I was doing now. I'm thinking, when I rewrite my essay, I should try to...
1) Write more about what I learned from my past experiences (making the right choices)
2) What I've done (volunteering-wise) and WHY that has sparked my interest in dentistry (this I find hard to do...I feel like when I'm writing this, someone could say, well why not medicine instead?...still working on it)
3) Also include this time, since being rejected the first time, what I've done this past year to turn things around...kind of show them my determination?

I have spring break at the end of this month and I was planning to write it then...

What do you think about what I listed above? One thing that sucks is that I'm a terrible writer...I have good ideas but I have a hard time expressing them properly...

Anyways, I would LOVE to hear what you have to say about writing this...you can PM if you want, THANKS! 🙂

much love my fellow predents <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" />

A 100%ile would mean you scored higher than yourself. That would be IMPOSSIBLE. So dont be BS me that you got a 100%ile unless ADEA decides to round up 99.99999.

There really isnt a big secret way to do well on the PAT (believe me, I tried to find one), you simply have to put in the TIME. I found the PAT exercises in the ADA booklet to be the most like the exam (makes sense that they would, eh?) and I also really liked the Kaplan book, which gave shortcuts on block counting, paper folding, etc. The most important thing on this section though is time spent doing problems.

LucidDreamer
Really, I'm not BSing the 100th percentile on Reading Comp! It really is what they gave me! Call the testing people and ask them about it; Im sure they'll confirm it for you...or if you want I can scan and send you my score report when I get back from spring break. Just call them so I dont have to make you look bad! (All in fun) 🙂

JonR is right. I also got 100 percentile in several sections.

Definitely possible to get 100th percentile guys...I did it too.

Andy, (the most recent post Andy), what did you get your masters in and how did you turn your GPA up like that?

Any advice for others that are reapplying or trying to improve their application after graduating. My bf has a gpa similar to yours and is considering getting a masters...just wondering if you could share any pointers or give some advice...sounds like you are a success story! Congrats and have fun in Philly!! 🙂

Andy
when did you interview at U of Mich? and when did you find out you didn't get in? I interviewed at the end of Feb and they still haven't sent me anything....
thanks!
yay for temple!

simseema17....
I'm getting my masters in molecular biology....as for the turn in gpa....i guess it's a little maturity, a little more focusing and studying hard to get acceptances rather than rejections, and a little bit that the school i'm going to now is like way less competitive than the school that I did my undergrad in so it was a little easier for me to do better...as for advice...all i can say is make sure you're prepared for the interview before you go...(if i had gotten in the first time i'd applied i'd be a 3rd year by now..=o(...but hey...i like the friends i've met on this road i've taken...=o)) but also if you don't get in anywhere...keep trying if dentistry is really what you wanna do. Like my interviewer at temple said "if you don't get in then reapply....it'll show your pursistance and dedication"....and i don't know what sane person would want to torture themselves by re-writing personal statements, dealing with aadsas, and paying money for hotels and interviews year after year unless they were really dedicated...so yeah....I think the masters helped especially with a low undergrad gpa like mine...

stargirl...as for u of mich...i interviewed in late january and heard back about a month later....yeah...it took them a while but I didn't really mind not getting in there....I dunno...it's a good school with great people and all but I just saw some aspects that I didn't think I would want in a dental school (like 4th years being able to send their work into a lab to be done rather than doing it themselves....i thought that was what school was for rather than have someone else do it...also small patient pool in just the ann arobor area..) but yeah...I hope that doesn't sound like sour grapes or anything...just my experience/opinion...😳P but yeah...i think it takes them about a month to get back to ya....good luck in the mean time though...=o)

What's w/ the crazy DAT scores? I feel like I just fell off the stupid truck. Shouldn't you guys be discovering a cure for cancer or finding a way to catch Osama Bin Laden or something?

Rejection is the greatest form of motivation.

Applied to: UCSF, UOP, NYU, UMDNJ

Accepted: UCSF, UOP, NYU, UMDNJ

Final decision: NYU

diente,
wow how did u come to choose out of your choices? just wondering...

Interesting question Stargirl,
It was mainly a combination of what school gave me the largest scholarship and the fact that my fiance is in NY. I considered a long distance relationship, but after a year of doing that, I think NYU is the better option.

hopefully,
actually you listed my top three schools, and it was very hard for me to decide between them, I actually sent in a deposit to UCONN, the major factor in deciding Columbia was location, it is very close to my family and in NYC, besides that I loved all three schools that you mentioned, and to answer the other post, no I am not rich, I am just as nervous as the rest of you about paying off the debt, congrats again to everyone and good luck next year!!

For Daryl wuss beast
I am attending UCSD too.
I'm in process of getting letter of rec.
Are your letter of rec all from science professors?
How should I approach them.
any advise?
thank you

Hey Agutier3,

I say you have a great chance. Your DATs are good and you have plenty of extracurriculars. Being president of your dental club I think would be an added plus. Good luck on your many interviews because my guess is that you will have many invitations. 🙂
