Hey everyone, I thought it would be useful for all the old and new Pre-dents to have a stats thread to use as a reference. So if someone ever asks you about your stats in the future, you can just type "look for that stats thread"!!

I'll start!

bumpin and grindin this page...

C'mon people, help everyone out and POST :)

Hi all.

Perhaps folks could also post the date that they submitted (or plan to submit) AADSAS? That would be beneficial in light of the information given.

For example, Viraj listed a great undergrad GPA (3.5-3.6), average DAT scores (18s), and applied to 24 schools -- yet he only lists one acceptance. The AADSAS submission date might explain why he has one acceptance and ten interviews, despite having pretty great numbers.

I, for one, would be interested in seeing some more physical correlations between early AADSAS submission and acceptances, etc. Perhaps this thread can help with that.

Good luck to everybody!

does anyone have any ideas as to why I wouldn't receive a single interview the 1st time I applied? I posted my stats on the 1st page of this thread...but I'll throw some more stuff out to see what you think...

Oh, and I think it mostly has to do w/my gpa...but here goes...

I went to Boston University for 2 years, and then started hanging out w/the "wrong crowd"...ended up doing things I regret and being in a not so-good relationship...anyways, by the end of the summer sophomore year, I decided I wanted out and needed to change, otherwise it was going to downward spiral...

I decided I was going to transfer, but since it was late in the summer, I took a leave of absence...I went to Australia for part of the time to see relatives and to "recooperate"...get priorites back in order...

I then transferred to SUNY Binghamton starting in January, and ended up graduating from there...I still graduated on time because I've taken many summer courses so I didn't lose time...things were much different w/me now...I had my priorities set straight and a lot more focused now...

I included this on my essay, but didn't delve into it...do you think this had a big impact on me not even getting an interview?

Also, when I reapply, should I include this or not? I mean, even if it had a negative bearing on me, I already wrote it in my first application, so its out there...

One last thing...I don't think if this had a negative effect or not but I have MANY transcripts...

- Syracuse University (took 2 college classes in high school)
- Regents college (another college class in high school)
- Boston University (1st two years of college)
- UMASS Boston (summer class-right before I left)
- SUNY Binghamton (last years of college, got my BA here)
- Hunter College (currently taking POSTBACC classes)

Ok, I'm not the typical applicant...what do you guys think? Is this adversely affecting me?

Simseema,

Your stats were a little low (especially the science GPA). I think this, combined with your "ok" DAT scores, probably didn't get you the interviews you wanted. However, your postbacc GPA is good. I think that you should really try to kill the DAT! I mean, shoot for the 20's, and study your a$$ off. Schools will comment on your grades if they are very good (I'm talking the admin staff when you talk to them on the phone). Another thing, make sure you get the application in early, and really make sure you follow up (at least every 2 weeks by phone call, and if they ask for more information, send it ASAP). That way, you're keeping up with them, and they see you're interested.

There is a section on the AADSAS form to describe any academic indiscrepancies you may have had, and I would do just that. Be honest! Tell them why you had trouble in school. Do delve into it! For the most part, schools are sympathetic to that. And I don't think it matters if it was already on your first application. I think it only matters if it's on your current application, so I would put it down!

One question... do your marks in undergrad show an upward trend in your GPA? If so, that's also very good in the case that you have a lower GPA. I too had an upward trend, and some schools did comment on this when I spoke with them.

Also, about your many transcripts, I don't think this has any impact on your chances. However, always put things in a positive light. It's actually good (in my opinion) that you took college courses in high school, provided that you did well in them!)

Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to PM me.

Bucky :D

Hey Simseema
I just glanced at ur stats, and u know what, u r in a same boat as my cousin was few years ago. He had almost the same scores, but he really slacked off in school and had 2.8 science GPA. He only applied to Texas schools, as he was a TX resident, and did got an interview at Baylor, but got waitlisted, and was never recalled. He took his DAT's again and I think he scored 19/18 the second time, but didn't took any classes, so his GPA was the same. He did apply to 14 schools, and didn't got in, anwhere. So I think the only reason might be ur GPA, as I think they really look strongly upon it. I can't say about scores as I had 18/15 (3.6 GPA) and I had 8 interviews and got into 3 schools. So I think if there is anyway, that you could boost up your GPA, it might help you big time. I hope this helps, and also I hope I didn't discouraged you.
Good Luck
Viraj

thanks guys...

yeah, I plan on working my butt of this semester and getting, hopefully, even better grades than last semester...

I'm gonna try and kill that DAT this summer...I'll put in the time and hopefully score in the 20's...

I don't think my grades were GREAT last semester, but better than any other previous semester...especially since they were all science classes...this semester I'm gonna try and get at LEAST the same grades (obviously shooting for better :) ) and I'm also volunteering in a dental clinic and tutoring chemistry part-time...

my grades last semester: Organic I (retake): A-, Biochem: B-, Microbio: B

this semester I got an A on my first Orgo II test! (And I think I did decent on my endocrinology exam this morning :) )

I hope I get in :) It's really discourging to get rejected :( , especially after 1. My parents are physicians and weren't too thrilled about me wanting to go into dentistry, instead of medicine 2. After explaining to them this is what I wanted to do, they finally understand me and then, WHAM! I get rejected EVERYWHERE...argh...

But I do see how my science gpa is holding me back...hopefully this application cycle I'll kick some butt...thanks guys :)

ps this is what you get for messing up a couple years in college...if any of you youngin's are reading this, try and do well the first time :)

Word of advice to future applicants: APPLY EARLY! send out your AADSAS ASAP...don't wait for DAT scores or letters of rec...start the processing of your app early...did i say early yet?

UofM01-
I chose Case for a few reasons. First of all, in the clinic everyone gets their own chair. Case was the only school which I toured that offered this. That means no fighting for chair time like at other schools. Second, the academic part of Case was absolutely fantastic. Students consistently scored very high on boards and had a relatively easy time specializing if they desired. Students there also seemed to really like the school. In addition, Case is putting in new labs this year which will be comparable to what Detroit-mercy has with computer software, manequinns, etc. The cleveland area around Case is also very nice and not a bad place to live. The area around Detroit-mercy was not so fantastic. I didn't really like the "feel" of the school with security gates and a fence around the entire school. I felt a little closed in. The facilities were very nice though. U of M did not really impress me that much. The Ann Arbor area is very nice but nothing spectacular about the school, in my opinion. They do have very high board scores (2nd overall i think they said) but my impression as a whole was not great. The facilities were ok but they had the same problems many other schools did competing for chair time (except Case). I guess I rambled a little but hope this is what you were looking for. Let me know if you want to know anything specific.

Why not...here goes

Overall UGrad GPA: 3.75
Sci. UGrad GPA: 3.7
DAT 21 Acad./21 Sci./18 PAT
Third-year student (applied a year early)

Applied: Penn, UConn, Tufts, Tennessee (home state), Kentucky, UNC, NOVA, UCLA, Alabama, Univ. of Kentucky, Univ. of Louisville, MUSC

Interview invites: All but Alabama and Tufts (both won't even look at 3rd year students)

Interviews attended: Penn, UConn, Tenn., UNC, Kentucky-(not enough $ for the others)

Accepted: All schools where I interviewed

Attending: UConn

On a personal note...it is so strange to see all of these posts of people that say they scored 20 or above on the DAT. I scored a 21 and that was the 97th percentile...I guess it just must be that all of the ones who scored well know about this post, though it still seems crazy to see about 7 or 8 people claiming to have gotten 25-26 Academic scores and 3.8-9's but havent gotten in. I'm not quite sure what I think about that. For those who didnt do so well, perseverance is the word of the day.

Yes. In fact, a score of 26 corresponds to the 100th percentile. (and actually, i think 25 is already the 100th percentile).

Obviously then, DAT scores are not the only factor admissions officers look at.

Applying early definite helps. Having a good interview is important.

But I can't say enough about having had a solid background in dentistry (be it research or volunteering).

Just as an example, I know someone who did not have incredibly high DAT scores, but who has been a dental assistant for 6 years. She got into Harvard (and all other schools she applied to) one week after her interview.

I hope that my lessons learned will help future pre-dents.

In the meantime, I still have more interviews to go to, albeit I know that spots are limited at this time.

There is no such thing as 100th %ile. Theoretically, you can get 99.9999%ile. haha...seems so strange though that there are quite a few people here with scores over 20. I scored a 23 and that was 99.6%ile. I guess the people who are chatting here really do want to get into dental school, which probably explains their high scores.

that was my PAT score above, cheers. :p

LucidDreamer...

While I am not sure what it ultimately means, the 100th percentile does show up on the score report.

And I've seen it on more than 1 person's report.

LucidDreamer,

Just because I got an 18 on my DAT doesn't make want to go to dental school any less than other people on here...if you've been here long enough, I'd think you'd realize that. Anyways, I'm retaking them anyways, just to maximize my chances. It seems as though a lot of people on the predental forum are trying to help each other out, whereas you seem like you're trying to put "people in their place"...why don't we try to keep our feet on the ground, ok?

Simseema17,

Honestly, I have been reading some of your posts including your stats and I do not see why you did not apply THIS year for dental school. I think that you would of been in for sure. Just my opinion.

thanks UofM01! You just made my week! :D

On a side note, I didn't apply this year because I wanted a solid year of "better" grades and I only recently decided to retake the DAT (this summer)...I'm also getting some more volunteering in this semester. Hopefully this approach will work...I just didn't want to reapply right away w/out making some significant differences...I thought they would take me more seriously this way...

anyways, thanks :)

It is possible to score in the 100th percentile, though I don't know for sure exactly what it means. I scored a 29 in the reading comprehension (really, I did!) and it showed up as the 100.0 percentile on my score sheet. Im not trying to get on anybody's case or anything, I just honestly didn't understand how so many people scored such high numbers! I mean, high numbers in a couple of categories=understandable, but straight 24-26's? I'm impressed! I hope all that said they scored a 26 did indeed; it would only show that those who post here are serious in their pursuits.
