Staying awake while studying?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I get 8-9 hours sleep/day but 4-5 hours after waking up, I'm really tired and feel like going to sleep again? I can't study without falling asleep soon thereafter. Anyone else have this type of problem? How do you fix it?

I used to feel groggy a lot too. I started making myself an organic fresh fruit + flaxseed + pomegranate juice smoothie everyday, and my energy levels have been way up - I think nutrition and hydration makes a real difference, and my memory is much better. I find the effect of getting vitamins from their "natural" source is more effective than taking them from pills - vitamins in pills have been processed and aren't in their natural environment (plus some studies show the pill versions don't really work well anyway). Exercise also does wonders.

It also helps to work with your natural circadian clock, if I wake up after 8-8:30, I usually feel groggy and less awake throughout the day.

I also have built into my day tricks that help me stay awake - I know that if I don't eat regular meals throughout the day, I tend to feel really drained and at times dizzy (low glucose); I know what to do when I feel tired to wake my brain up (eat a snack bar, go exercise, or do something else to jog my brain)... in summary, nutrition + lifestyle + knowing how you work.

Definitely agree on the diet and exercise stuff. If that's not working out though, I love chocolate covered espresso beans. Most delicious way to stay awake!

Drink some Four Loko. You'll probably destroy your T.V. and throw up on your textbook, but the Hulk rampage it induces should keep you awake for a while.

That stuff will screw you over... 😱

it's normal to have that drop in energy around that time according to your biological clock - around 12 pm and 4-5 hrs after you wake up im guessing are pretty close together. Quick power naps are actually normal and beneficial, so if you cant or dont want to work out - which is a great way for a energy boost - those refresher naps or periods of rest help with information retention, consolidation, and especially concentration.

Monster + 5 hour energy combo cocktail = Epic Win Time

(Srsly, don't try this at home)
