Dr. Anthony Atala at Wake Forest University reported a new source of stem cells today. Here's the link to the story.

This guy's going to win a Nobel Prize for his research someday. See Wake's website for more details on his Center for Regenerative Medicine.

His research team has been working on this for a good 6 years already. Collecting blood cord is very wise and good have huge benefits in the future. It would be wise for all future doctors, an current med students, to learn all you can about stem cells. Stem cell transplantations are not far off (beyond what is already being done with adult stem cell transplantations).

This group recently published their paper in the journal Nature Biotechology.

It just goes to show you that you don't have to be at the top universitites to do good medicine and science.

I read this the other day and though that it was awesome!!!! But I thought that they found the stem cells in the amniotic fluid... correct me if I am wrong. But either way it's a scientific break through.

You make it sound like Wake isn't a top university...you must have really high standards.

And for the record, the stem cells were found in the amniotic fluid, not the cord blood.

Yeah it was amniotic fluid. I think a lot of the press releases were coupling the finding with possible advancements with umbilical cord stem cells, so it's understandable as to why there would be confusion.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to what will come out of Dr. Atala's lab between this and the bladder they made.
