After talking with a few students getting ready to take step 1, they all pretty much said they would have wished to have some step 1 practice guides that they could write notes in during their first and second years while all of the information was fresh. So, I was wondering if anyone who has taken and/or is getting ready to take them knew of some solid practice books that I could buy for this year (1st year). Basically, it would just be to write notes in them for anything that looks like it would relevant all the while getting a feel for what type of things I need to know (detail level and all of that).

Have you checked out First Aid for USMLE Step 1? I've heard that it's useful to begin using your first year in the various classes. They also have one for the COMLEX, but it seems like many of the DO students I speak with use the USMLE book.

I've been told by several people, DO and MD students, to get the current edition of First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 before even starting school and then to pick up the edition for your particular Step 1 exam year further down the road. I picked up a copy earlier this week.

They're the same year to year. Im in first aid 2011 right now and its like the 2010. It's not a bad idea to go through each subject and annotate during 1st year so that you'll have those notes later on, but first aid is very high yield so you should already know AND remember most of it if you learned rather than crammed in class.

After my first year, I'm really glad that I took the time and actually learned the material because as I go through this, I can recall a good bit.

Keep in mind that you're going to need a lot more than first aid for the actual exam
