Hey guys,

I need some advice. I took step 2 ck late- after graduation from medschool because my school didn't have a requirement to take it before graduation. I have started my intern year, part of which requires me to complete step 3 before I finish the year. I just got my scores back for step 2 ck and just barely failed (181). My questions are

Do I need to have passed step 2 ck before taking step 3?
Will this affect my standing in my residency program?
I am applying for pgy-2 spots in preventive medicine this year- should I try to have a passing score by the time I submit my applications (around november, december due dates) and if so how early should I retake?

Thanks

My understanding is that you can take the steps in any order. I've known people who did all the written boards and saved the CS for last. Not sure if that still applies if you fail one of them, but I don't see why it wouldn't. But really this goes more into the question of whether you should move on to Step 3 before redoing CK. I think it would be a good idea to pass the CK before moving on, otherwise you risk running into the same problems for Step 3.

I think how it affects your standing kinda depends on the program you're in, but I'd imagine that it doesn't help you. Pass rates and scores for tests reflect in the program's statistics, and some are stingier than others about it.

Though I'm not a reliable source of information on how you should approach to applying to PGY-2 spots, I think it might look better to have taken the Step 2CK and passed than to take it later and apply with a failing score as your most recent. But take the test only when you're ready. You want to make sure you pass it the next go around.

I always thought you had to pass ck to match.
the way you described it you could finish residency without ever having to pass step 2????????

How did you start graduation and get license without step 2 scores?
