When should you take step 2 Ck if you have a strong step 1 score? Most people say to delay it but I’ve also heard this advice is outdated and programs want to see it before interviews.

I am assuming you are asking for next year's application as it wouldn't be ready for interviews with this application cycle.
My advice would be to take it, you have to be prepared and you definitely don't want to drop too much from step 1. If your step one is amazing and you drop 10 points it is probably not going to hurt you and it might help you in some cases to have it. If you drop 30 points that's another whole problem. Of course, you shouldn't "plan to fail" and rather plan to succeed. If you are applying in 2020, I'd say if you take prior to April you should have your results and be ok. Three-four months of study should also be plenty anyways if you do it diligently and seriously. You don't have to lose your mind and hair studying, you just have to dedicate at least 5h of serious study time per week for about 10 weeks and you should be in decent shape if your clerkships are solid.
The cheer sense of relief and "being over" with those tests is reason enough to do it. You might even be a more likable person after you are done with your steps =), that's reason enough to try to do Step 3 as well, but that's not your question. Good luck.
