Hi,
I am starting residency this July. I want to take Step 3 before that. Some of my friends say that its better to take after I join residency.. I s passing Step 3 enough or do we need to get a good score in Step 3? Does Step 3 score matter at all in the future. Please feel free to express your views.
THanks,
Teja

I've been told that you just need to pass.
THanks for the reply. I guess I should just go ahead and take the exam

Some fellowships may look at a low score as a red flag. Most will be ok with passing...

BTW if you want to take it before resident starts (I'm assuming around July 1st) you'd better apply soon. 🙂

Some residency programs will actually pay for you to take Step 3, so before you go and spend your own money, make sure that's not the case with your program. Also, depending on the state you are in, you may not be eligible to take the test. Some states allow you to take it right away, while others make you wait for a certain amount of time.

All you gotta do is register to take it in another state (e.g. Connecticut, which has no requirements, IIRC). Then just take it in your own state.

Hello, thanks for your reply. Can you please guide me as to what is considered a good score on Step 3---Say 80/85 or more?? I have good scores in Step1 and 2 and dont want to screw it up in Step 3. Any advise please.

I have already registered (onecticut) but was wondering if I should really take it now.

Does it really matter? Are you going to study less to try and achieve a certain score, if you knew it didn't matter? Can you really predict what score you're going to get anyway?

why are u so worked up about it anyway?
assuming you have a residency spot already and u dont have H 1 visa issues, i dont see what the fuss is .

register with CT board and try to pass . thats all there is to it.
if aiming for fellowship, first attempt shud be good enuf.
