I was wondering what type of Littman Cardio III do most medical students have? All the tube length kinda threw me off. I am planning to order one online, but I don't know which is which.

get the longer scope. with the shorter one you'll be stuck right next to your sick patients face.

it just depends. are you going to be a cardiologist?
if not, then who cares?

i have a pretty good stethoscope - it's a rappaport-sprague - i needed to buy one so i just asked one of our cardio attendings which one to get after class one day. she also said that the shorter one is better.

but honestly - it doesnt really matter.
even if you are going to be a cardiologist - that's what echos are for 😉

(and dont even reply giving me crap about how important the physical exam is, blah blah blah, that was a JOKE)

You never need more than 4 inches.

Just ask sacrament.

You hear things better with the shorter tube. You get to stand a few inches further from the patient with longer ones. Depends how smelly your patients are. or how sensitive your nose is. If you are not in med school yet, I would wait on that purchase (unless your school has told you to get one), as sometimes vendors make presentations and offer group discounts on medical equipment, and at some places you won't really use it much in most of your first year anyhow.

i don't think that at this stage in our training, we're going to be picking up the subtle differences between and 22" and a 27" in scope. probably never will unless you're a cardiologist or pulmologist.

and allheart.com usually has the best prices on stethoscopes. i bought mine from them and it was cheaper than the group discount through the school.

Probably true, but it still pays to wait and see and comparison shop. There will be no stethescope use in the first couple of months of med school at most (all?) schools.

Hi, I also bought my Littman Cardio III from http://www.allheart.com
It is a great scope. I love it. I would suggest you get your name on it as well. That way it wont be as easy to lose. I have teh regular length tube and it has never been a problem for me.

I started a thread about this a while ago, and some guy referred me to this thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=3289972&postcount=15

This thread is the only one worth reading on stethoscopes, as this guy really knows his stuff. Everyone else will tell you to go littmann cardiology because that is what they use.

On a completely unrelated note: THIS IS MY 1000TH POST!! W00T W00T 😎

Thank you guys. Yeah I will start M1 in August so no clue what is going on really. However most of the med student said just to buy one now, because you will need it sooner or later.

So I guess the shorter one is better then, hmm smelly patient...... but then again my nose is not that good most of the time.

Congrats on the 1K posts! 👍

Thanks for the stethoscope thread link, too. Littmanns really are terribly overrated, IMO.

KentW is a good resource for comparisons of scopes. In another post, he referenced the Welch-Allyn Harvey Elite as one of the good modern brands. I use this scope and have found it to have better sound quality than my classmates' Littmans. The Harvey is heavy, but it sounds great.
