stick with easier major, sociology or stick with more interesting major

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You didn't mention the other major. In any case if you think sociology is boring, you are just doing it wrong.

You're gonna get mixed opinions here. Something interesting doesn't necessarily have to be difficult. My vote is for something you like learning about and that you can draw meaningful experiences from the courses. It helps to have a unique background from something like that.

I think we are all :beat: considering the amount of threads on this topic but I will contribute.

You should choose a major that you are interested in. Don't choose a major because you think the med school will like it. Don't choose a major because you think the ladies will like it. Choose a major because you will like it.

I can't imagine studying a major for 4 years that I wasn't interested in...Also, my roommate and I went to high school together...To make a long story short..he picked the easiest major you could possibly pick (I won't mention it bc I'm sure someone will try to defend it)...All throughout college he would see me studying and would be like "dude, how is it possible to study that much. I never study." Well, it is now years later...he is paying back loans..and works at a bar...So, yes, he did have an easy four years...but he is paying tuition for a major he didn't care about and has nothing to show for it..And he has no plans to pursue a career that is related to his major bc he had no interest in his major...so save yourself the regret and pick a major completely based on what you enjoy...

You want to waste 2 of some of your best years studying something you don't enjoy as much. College happens only once, enjoy the classes you want to take. Go with psychology (it isn't usually that anyways)

Seriously, do what you find interesting but there is a wonderful intersection between psych and sociology. Maybe you could could major in one and take some social psych classes to get the interphase. 👍

You have 4 years to study biology and the sciences in medical school, not to mention the learning that continues in residency and during your career. College is the 4 years you get to study what you want.

its frustrating because sociology doesn't seem so great after all ...but I'm in a time crunch so i feel like i might as well take sociology since i've already taken 2 classes (this semester) vs. only taken 1 general psychology class. its

If you really think psych would be more interesting than switch, a one credit difference shouldn't be that hard to accomodate. Keep in mind just becuase two of your soc classes have been disappointing doesn't mean all your future ones will be. Sociology has a million sub disciplines that oyu might find interesting. Hating intro to soc or some strange sociology of X topic doesn't mean you are going to hate everything in the dept. It really depends on your school's dept though.

Perhaps you can check out some of your faculty's research and see if you find anything exciting and try and take some classes with those professors. Also, look at the reqs and who teaches them. Check out the faculty. If you are interested in both psych and soc I would look carefully at the faculty teaching the courses you have to take and the major electives and decide based on who has the better teachers and more exciting (to you) research.

Do what's interesting... no point in doing stuff you're not as interested in for 4+ years. Life is finite. I'm in a physiology/neuroscience major right now and it's not easy but it's interesting and I'll be damned if I was doing something else. You won't regret it as long as you are genuinely interested in Psych.

On the other hand, why would you choose a career that involves a lifetime of studying biology and the [other] sciences if you don't "want" to study biology and the other sciences?

I have a dual major and it consists of Biology Sociology and I loved the sociology part of it. do you what you feel you'll do best in.

Some people have interests that they will not make into a career. Nobody said you have to be interested in only 1 thing. Obviously if you are pursuing a career in medicine you must have some interest in biology and the sciences but you may also be interested in history or a foreign language. You may not want to turn your love for history or a foreign language into a career but you still may want to learn more about it. All I am saying is you have the rest of your life to be around science so if you have other interests that you may not get to explore in the future than college may be the time to do so.

i think whatever major you choose you should show excellence in it .. and if you're interested in psych, why not? If you're flunking, then you prob arent into it like you say you are .. so go with psych

whoever said that medicine isn't multidisciplinary? if all you wanted to do is study science the lab is that way --->

Some people do have interests that they don't want to develop into careers. In addition others have interests that they can integrate into their careers. Let me refer you to the MD/PhD programs over at harvard. That is MD and a PhD in economics, policy, anthropology and yes... even sociology. There are other programs like this as well.

is it too late to switch to psychology? that would mean I"d have to take psych classes and finish the major in two years...i'm not sure if its realistically possible to switch now

..psychology, which is more interesting. help! i'm at the end of my junior year (but graduating in 5 years) i don't know what to do

Is psychology really that much harder than sociology? At my school atleast, both of these majors are considered to be among the easiest. But anyways, you should always stick with what is easier of course. No sense in overworking yourself before the real fun begins in med school.

at most schools, psych and sociology are equally as easy. go with the one you are more interested in

easiness is relative. the more interesting it is to u, the more likely youll do well.

I started out college majoring in computer science as my premed major. I was interested in it but that junk didn't come to me easily and right when I saw my GPA begin to take a dip I changed to bioinformatics which had a more biological component to it. Of course I was interested in biology too and it was not as difficult as straight CS. I think I also didn't want to do straight bio because if med school didn't work out, there's not much to do with a BS in Biology.

Honestly, I'd say choose wisely. If what you're interested in might end up getting you a very subpar GPA, buffer it up with another major or minor because when adcomms see a low GPA no matter how high your science GPA is, it will still raise a red flag. Interest or no Interest.

(I think I went a little round about in my answer but hopefully you can garner some useful info).
