I'm a patient, 54 male, 30+yr history of calc/ox stones, approx 1 per year. Mostly <5mm, passed w/o intervention, but 6 or so required eswl or laser litho.
I know when I'm passing a stone. Usually the size and location as well...Most have passed with one or two episodes of renal colic.
Love my urologist. chief of surgery at mid sized city teaching hospital, yale affiliate.
Month ago, presented with dull flank pain and 2 episodes of gross hematuria, and non contrast CT was ordered.No occult blood on dip. Report came back negative for stones and hydronephrosis. I was planning a trip to central america, and didnt want to find myself in renal colic with a large stone in a really backward medical environment.
Went on the trip, renal colic first night. Luckily had adequate analgesia. I knew at the time, stones were at UVJ, and made it through....within 36 hours, have passed 4 stones, 3 of which are 4 mm.
He's never missed a stone before, and assured me he had reviewed the scans himself, not just depending on radiologist report. Plenty of historical CT's to compare, as recent as 6 months ago.
