Hi Guys,

Does anyone know why there's such a discrepancy in tuition cost between Downstate's and Stony Brook's MPH programs? They're both SUNYs, but one is nearly $7,000 more!

Right, but I'd expect Downstate to be more.

Instead, Stony Brook takes the cost cake!

😕

I think it might have to do with the fact that more people want to go to SB than Downstate. They can get away with charging you more (despite being part of the same university system) because people will still want to put their hard earned cash into SB for the privilege of having Stony Brook printing on the diploma. It's like wanting to be a graduate of UC Berkeley versus UC Riverside. You get a quality education from both, but one has the name recognition and WOW factor.

Maybe the reason they need more money is because their faculty is a little more renowned, and in order to prevent them from going to rival institutions SB needs to pay the faculty a salary comparable to a private institution. The big cats behind the desks figure to pass on the bill to students (because they'll pay for the reason I said above).

I'm just speculating 🙂

That's interesting, however, with faculty salaries, professors in sciences have to make their own salaries by grants. Universities pay little, if any, science faculty salaries. Of course, if the university is, they're going to cut them loose since they're not cutting their weight in grants 😱

Stony Brook's MPH program has the same tuition as the MPH programs at Downstate, Buffalo, Upstate, and Albany - $349/credit hour. At present, the SUNY system does not allow tuition differences between schools. See the following websites:
