I have just received the e-mail from SB that I am on the waitinglist.

Don't know if it's because I interview late or I really sucked at my interview (interview on ~2/13).

The staff told me during the orientation that 85% of people who got accepted attend the school. That is really high stat. I am wondering if anyone of you know how long is the waitinglist and how I can find out my standing on the waitinglist? (Don't know if it's good idea to bother the admission staff). What is the chance of people on waitinglist got accepted???

Damn yo Stony Brook

My friend made it off the waitlist last cycle. His stats were not stellar at all, but going to Stony Brook Med was like his life dream and he made it plenty clear to the adcom.

I believe that 85% matriculation rate is true. They are stingy with their acceptances and only give them to people they believe really really really want to be at Stony Brook. They were the only school to reject my other buddy without an interview two cycles ago, he had a 3.9, a 42 MCAT, an interesting life story, and was half-hispanic to top it all off.

If you can somehow convince them Stony Brook really is your first choice, you have a much better chance at getting in off the waitlist. A letter of intent, at the minimum, would probably be necessary.

I reason I got accepted was because both my interviews went great; they were by far the best I had in this cycle.
But I think if this is your no. 1 school, you should make that clear to them, send them an email and explain it to them.

I interviewed at Stony Brook at the end of January (~Jan. 29) and am still waiting to hear back from them. I think it is probably going to be a rejection since it is taking so long. I emailed them for status and they said it was still with the committee. They seem to be pretty quick when they send out their acceptances and waitlists.

I hate to scare you or burst your bubble, but it really seems that if you don't hear back from them within 3 weeks you're going to get rejected. I'm not saying this is DEFINATLEY the case with you, but that's what happened to me. I waited 8 weeks for something and all I got was a rejection. I sent a letter of intent and I called the admissions office almost once a week after 3 weeks had past and I always got the same story, "Oh, it seems your application is still with the committee. I'm sorry for the wait, sometimes it just takes a little bit longer." I had a connection in the school that I emailed at that time and she told me that it was indeed the time that the committee was deciding who goes on the waitlist and who gets rejected. That may give you some hope, but otherwise I think it's going to be tough cookies.

Think of it this way though: They have a class of 116 or so. If 87% of their class who is accepted matriculates, that only leaves about 18 seats available for waitlisted applicants. They said at the interview that you have about a 33% chance of being accepted off the waitlist, so that means there are only going to be between 50 and 60 students on the waitlist.

That being said, don't give up hope. I wish you luck. Stony Brook was my top choice so I was pretty bummed about it, but I'm not giving up.

How can I find out my standing on the waitlist? The admission told me that it is possible that they still give out acceptance to people on waitlist one week before the class starts. I would rather they give me a rejection letter now than put me on the waitlist for another 5 months. I love Stony Brook. it's definatly my first choice. However, I can't afford to turn down other offer for the possibility of attending Stony Brook.

metalmd06, you mentioned that you are not giving up with Stony Brook despite getting rejected. What do you plan on doing next to help your chances of getting in?

I called before. They won't tell you your standing until May something.

Does anyone know what day the admissions committee meets??

Well I'm just going to be persistent and apply early. I'm going to, if necessary (i.e. if I'm not accepted this year) take some upper division science classes like micro, biochem and genetics. I'm a non trad and I did a post bacc so I haven't taken any of thoses classes yet. Hopefully if I ace them adcoms will see my persistance, an upward trend of sorts and my academic prowess. I'm mulling over taking the MCAT again but many people have advised me against it. I have a 30 (9PS, 9VR, 12BS)P.

i thought the never told you your standing on the waitlist...will they actually tell you a specific ranking after may 15?

Wow they got back to you quick. I interviewed a week earlier and still havent heard anything back. Is there a status page or something?

Thanks

Is anyone still waiting to hear from Stony Brook? 1/29 interview and no response yet. It is already 6 weeks. How much longer do you think it could take? 12 weeks?😴

how frequently/when does the stony brook adcom meet?

just withdrew. godspeed fellas, good luck.

really no ideas about when their adcom meets/what days they normally notify ppl of decisions? 🙂

They still don't tell you about the waiting list rank. I just called today 6/26/08. How can I find out the rank?

They wont tell, however, they did say there was movement. I wonder how many ppl will get accepted off the waitlist given its a strong state school?

Yes, the Stony Brook waiting list does move throughout the whole summer. Quite a few of us Class of 2011's were accepted off the waiting list.

Keep the faith. 👍

co 2011, i was accepted off the waitlist, they move, dont freak out just yet

i have a friend in co 2009 who was accepted a week before classes started.
