Anybody out there receive any acceptances to stonybrook. I am still waiting, I was wondering if i missed the first cut. nothing came in the mail today and i live pretty close to stonybrook.

I just received a call from Stony Brook to let me know that I was accepted. She said that the letters went out in the mail yesterday. 🙂

I'm accepted at Stony Brook -- Dean Riley called me last night to let me know. The letters go out today and should be arriving this week!

I didn't receive any call, it doesn't look good for me for this school i guess...

Can you guys and gals that got into Stoney share your stats please.........
I didn't bother applying because mines were too low but maybe I'll reconsider after hearing yours

wise146,

from what I've been reading over the past few weeks, you sound like a great applicant. I wouldn't be worried.

Dean Riley also called me. I talked with her a bit, she is on maternity leave, and is making calls when her newly born baby is napping, so it sounds like the calls that she is making are scattered....whenever she gets a free moment. I bet you'll get a call soon.

I forgot to reply to speter33...

my gpa is about 3.7 (BS in Biochem, and MBA) , DAT AA=20, PAT=17...

HOly cow........ please tell me there's some people with lower gpas out there who got accepted

The 2002 stats from Stony says their average GPA is 3.5 and average DAT academic is 19.7 and average PAT is 18.7.

It's a pretty difficult school to get into even for NYS residents...

And if you are an out-of-stater, as they say in Brooklyn, fuhgettaboutit! 😀

All in all, I have to say I'm very impressed with you guys being accepted to so many schools. Good job!

I'm in BK gpa 3.3 DAT 15/20/20 (pat, AA,sci), so I didn't bother applying

I just received a call from dean riley---she said both me and my wife have been accepted to stony brook!!!!!!!!!!

wise what were ur stats if u dont mind sharing........ thanx

22 AA, 21 science, 14 PAT

oh and 3.77 overall gpa, 3.7 science gpa

Congrats everyone!

My stats are BS biology, BA health care policy, GPA 3.8, Sci = 22, PAT 18

Stony Brook has class size of 30-40. It looks like they don't have more seats left. It's my first choice school. I havn't heard of anything from them. Not even an interview.

i just got the call last night for stonybrook. i think that there is still hope for others because there is always a wait list for people since everyone accepted to a school will not choose to go there. i did hear that their acceptance stats are going up each year though. congrats to everyone who got in!

from the people who got accepted to stony brook, does anyone mind saying if they are definitely going there? i think it would be cool to see who is going to be going to school with me in the fall! and by the way, what is the deposit for stonybrook? (and how much are they planning to raid from us poor college students' pockets so early in the game?)

both me and my friend got accepted... I heard they accept 80 ppl for the first round.

Yeah i got a call from dean riely on the night after december 1st. I had just finished coming back from my UConn interview and was not too happy from that school leaving stonybrook as my top choice so needless to say i was elated to hear when i was accepted there and i will definately be attending.

BS Biology SUNY Stony Brook
3.78 Cum./ 3.90 Science
21 AA, 22 Sci, 19 PAT

as far as low gpa concerned I have a 3.25/3.3 gpa and 20/20/18 (i think) for AA/Sci/PAT DAT and I got accepted to Stony Brook, cause not only grades count. Stony is my #2 choice, esp money concerned(#3 UB, and #4 UMDNJ). however, the stony's dental building was a little too small and secluded from everything else for me, even though i like the size of the class, and loved the clinics. So, I guess, there is a choice to make, between UConn and Stony Brook - i would hate to give up my "NY" residence for cheaper price of pay at UConn, but i guess this is a small sacrifice for the atmosphere compatible particularly to me. Congrats everyone, once again - I am glad that mostly everyone is very supportive on this forrum, like a team!!!

P.S.:wise, let me know if you and your wife had made any concrete decisions about UB, Stony and UConn

rsawpo, My stats are very similar to yours, except i got 15 on PAT. I only hope to get into any of the schools you list, like buffalo and NJ. Didn't even bother applying to stoney cause i thought at least a 3.5 was necessary.
Can't believe u got in with those stats. Congrats!!

as I said earlier, not only grades count though. I was not sure about getting into Stony either, especually after that intimidating interview, which i think i still handled well, but... .
I guess, they look at your grades in relation to your major, as well as other things such as volunteering, research work, work, and activities. I think what helped me was that I have done research for the past 3 years (summers and thesis year), and am working right now on a research fellowship. Plus, I did missionary dental work in Jamaica for a week that the dentist who i shaddowed took me with him - these experiences are valueable besides the other activities and gpa. And, as we go through these interviews, I guess, what i did was I tried to bring up the important aspects of my application to pin point something different other than gpa and dats, cause they are certainly not enough.

I trully say, as I was getting into to deciding on which schools to apply to, i was sceptical of getting into schools of my choices with such gpa. I knew that even though I was with biochem major and psyc minor, that was not an excuse for getting 3.25. I did not consider this low, but looking at statistics of each schools enrollees, it made me worry. Until i heard about the interviews I was very worried - then it made me think " since I got some interviews, it is not that bad as I think it is" and that gpa might not be a great factor.

Also, in my application as well as interivew i talked about my dexterity and tried to back it up by various things that i did as hobbies and activities such as drawing, playing piano, sandstone carving. It was important for me cause I consider dentistry not only as medicine but also as art work that requires skill and good hand-eye coordination. However, who knows whether i will actually be good at it, until i actually get into it 🙂

Anyways, i hope i did not blunder too much and possibly gave some insight for some current readers or future applicants.
Congratulations again to those who ARE going to a Dental school, and wishing no worries to those who did not hear yet - it is definitely too early still.

my wife and I still are chosing between uconn, buffalo and stony. we are still waiting to hear from columbia but we don't really want to go there. we will probably choose between buffalo and stonybrook for the cheaper price. does anybody know if there is a money difference attending stony over buffalo or vica versa. I am glad I will be attending schoool with such pleasant and professional people that I have met at this forum. congrats to everybody.

You should have gotten the yearly budget for UB with acceptance, and stony gave a hand out during the interview - it seems that UB is cheaper - in terms of housing, esp that you will save money since you live with your wife.

I have both handouts. The money looks very similar for both schools. What buffalo makes for in the rent---the whole dvd expensive system catches it up. plus i live near stony brook so i have to factor in what it would cost to move to buffalo and the extra costs to visit family/friends. What are you leaning toward ras??

Then I would go for Stony. In my opinion, the only thing I did not like that it was a little too claustraphobic as far as the building is... i prefer UConn to stony in that sense. However, you are right aout the dvd curriculum, and if you will not read the books from the pc, which is most students at UB and UMDNJ told me, then it is not worth it cause then you have to bother printing the stuff (you might have known that anyways, so ii am just telling my side). I loved the clinics of Stony, very bright, and the digitalized scheduling and etc is what is good about it. Stony is my #2 after UConn, then UB, because of the weather, distance from home(Albany NY), not as good clinics as in Stony brook. I consider distance as well for me, and this is where Uconn in my case is better than stony. I guess, I did not receive the official letter form Stony Brook(only a v-mail from Dr Riley) so may be if I had some scholarship or smth, then I would give Stony more thought.

here are things summarized about stony pros compared to UB:
1)nice and bright clinics, well kept, modernized more than UB's
2)weather
3)not to far of a distance from home and friends
4)only 40 students
5)no DVD curriculum, though I still like it to a degreee (i can spend days at the computer reading)- but the money part still bothers me

negatives are:
1)secluded feeling of the building
2)higher rent, more expensive living

rsawpo i really liked uconn as well. I just don't want to pay the 60K for the first year as an out of state resident. plus 20k for living seems kind of high. what are your thoughts...were you offered a scholarship at Uconn??

i just have to defend stony brook in one aspect. although the dental school is in its own separate building from the hospital, the surrounding town and close proximity to NYC really don't make the overall experience to be one that is secluded. (just a note from a native long islander!) i think both stony and uconn are great choices, but the cost of uconn really threw me over to the side of stony.

my gpa was 3.3/3.4, 19/19/18 ... and was accepted. But then again, grades aren't everything. I spend 2 month at marquette's pre-dental program, 2 weeks at umdnj's gateway to dentistry, plenty of shadowing, research, eboards at clubs (secretary and webmaster for pre-dental club), and killer interview techniques. 🙂

I got interviewed at buffalo, umdnj, stony, and nyu. Got accepted to all except for nyu (don't really care for).

I like to stay close to the city, so that eliminates buffalo. So it comes down to stony and umdnj.
School-wise, I would say umdnj is a better school, don't ask me why, I just like it from my gut ( I think it's becoz of nice class size, newark [more patients], atmosphere, new dental school, dvd curriculum [ like the idea of typing instead of writing during lectures], etc.).
Tuition-wise, I would go for stony.
Tough decision...still deciding.

how much more money is new jersey bingpredent??

roughly 8 - 10,000

tuition for stony is 13,300 as compare to 19,000+ in new jersey......don't really understand since both are state school and all... and the dvd curriculum cost a bit extra too.

I was not offered scholarship at neither of the places, but as dr. Thibodeau said during the interview day that scholarships that are offered to students who do not decide to go to UConn get transfered to remainig top of the percentage of students to some cut of rank, that they give you when they evaluate you. Stony has scholarships too, I just don't which ones.
You are right about the 1st year at UConn, it makes me think too. However, when considering UConn, UB and stony, imp thing i noticed that budget for stony is for 10 month period, thus the other 2 months you still have rent, good, utilities, personal things to spend money on. UB does not specify for how many months they are estimating the numbers, in which case I woudl advise calling them up and finding out. UConn however, lists budget for the 12 months (except for the 1st year with 11 months budget). You say that UConn is high for living, but first of all, they want to make sure you do get enough money to live on (i think it was mentioned on teh interview day , but don't hold me to that, rather i should find out - i will try to get in contact with the 3rd year student there who gave us a tour). Another thing is that Stony splits all the living expenses by details, which is very nice for me, but if you add them up it comes up to be about 17300 a year or so for 10 months - that is 20700 a year for 12 months. Little details, though 3grand is a bit of difference, since you are not just going to stop rent. So, in the end both schols have similar living expenses, which is understandable from their suburban/rural (i don't know how to classify them really) areas. One other thing to compare UB to Stony, is that.. even though 40 students is not much at all, but you will have less people , that is more attention, and more ability to do better on a rank wise, in case, just in case you wanted to specialize or do a graduate program. Yet, both schools are known to be good at going to graduate programs.

It's all your and your wife's call - we are lucky we have choices to choose from, some people do not have such an opportunity. If you have any input, othe details you learned - i would greatly appreciate. i will try calling this guy from UConn, and ask about patients and clinical years, so i will tell you more later i guess.

I am sorry if i did not make myself clear on the seclusion part. I totally agree with you that it is not secluded, esp considering NYC. What I was talking about was the building atmosphere, since it is THERE where i will be spending most of my day life. I liked that there were windows everywhere , but the atmosphere for me is imp. k cause i don't study at home, just can't, and i don't want to be feeling enprisoned in one little building. If it was 1-2 years, certainly, but 4 is a bit of a stretch for me personally. That is all i was trying to say. I have friends in NYC, however, those will be the getaways since all the time will have to go to work (or procrastination 😛 hehe).

to answer rsawpo's question about cost of living in Buffalo:

I got some good news. I just saved a bunch of money on car insurance by switching to Geico.

I'm being serious! Up here in WNY, my full-coverage car insurance is $860/year. Down there in NYC or on Long Island before I moved up, my car insurance is $3200/yr. 😱

UB budgets $10K/year for living expenses in your student loans and it is adequate. My rent, utilities, phone and cable bill comes out to $700/month. You can eat like a king for $100/week. Gasoline costs $1.80/gallon of premium high-octane (only the best for my car!) and I fill up about once every 2 weeks.

The student-to-faculty ratio in UB's preclinic labs and in clinic is about 7 to 1. On rotations (Pedo, OMFS) the ratio is 5 to 1. You get A LOT of attention from the instructors at UB.

You WILL get the same quality of education at Stony and Buffalo. Both are SUNY schools after all.

HTH!
