hey just wanted to know whats everyone doing with the teeth they are collecting?? storing them in bleach?

well I haven't yet but I'm about to start. Yeah they say 10:1, water:bleach or is it 9:1?

Why do you wanna save teetch for dental school?
Do we need them to study?

This is sick. I want to know why school requests that during the application process we start playing tooth fairy and saving up teeth for dental school? That's preposterous. Where would you get them?

Some schools do lab mock ups of endo on the teeth before your first actual patient. Storage is key or they will crumble and not be preserved well enough to be useful. Usually there are enough floating around at d-school that more than 20-30 is overkill, if your school requires you to get teeth at all.

I just started dental school and we were told to store the teeth in 10 parts water to 1 part bleach in a sealed jar labeled "Biohazard."

10:1 is correct (water:bleach)

you use a couple of teeth your first year to practice drilling on and such, and second year is when you use the majority of them I've heard.

Go to a few dentists, OMFS's, etc. Give them a jar with the solution and say "hey I'm going to dschool, I need teeth." They will know what you're talking about and they will help you out.

thanks. yea i was told bleach & water so now im positive, 10:1 got it.

yea kinda weird when i found out you had to collect teeth....then i read someone on here say they were up to 300 teeth and hadn't even started school yet...so that was motivation for me to start!

where is the source for you guys to obtain teeth?

General Dentists, Periodontists, Oral Surgeons... I have plenty of 3rd molars and a small number of anterior teeth. The general dentists I dropped off jars for didn't extract many teeth, so your best bet is probably perio and OMS.

haha after I read the first post I thought you guys were talking about your own teeth (like baby teeth).
but that's pretty cool, I didn't know the schools want you to collect teeth. I'm a dental assistant and we do maybe 2-3 extractions a week, maybe I'll start collecting toO!?

I have extracted three of my permanent teeth just for dental school.

There are usually overzealous students who will collect 300 teeth and will have plenty to go around. Otherwise talk to an OMS and bug them to save teeth for you.

Yeah, I'm going to bust out all of my own teeth so that I can have some for dental school...😀

NOT.

You performed an extraction on yourself? That is pretty cool.😉 (I know what you mean.)

my dentist has been storing some for me where i work. i took a look and they're turning bright blue! i think she forgot the 10:1 ratio because i believe they were being stored in 100% bleach. i wonder if they're useless now?...

One dentist I spoke with said when he stored them he added a couple of drops of oil to keep the teeth from crumbling and they were in good condition later.🙂

Wait up, how do you guys know we're supposed to store teeth?? I didn't read that anywhere on any school sites...is it something that everyone just does? Yikes!

Sorry off-topic, Aish is just ewww

Go to oral surgeons. I got about 20 extracted teeth in a month. You will use them to practice prepping teeth.

old thread is old

but 10% formalin solution is better than bleach

this sounds both interesting and Hannibal Lecter like lol

Anybody know if we can fly with a family-sized peanut butter container full of teeth & bleach solution?

I know with TSA regulations, you can't fly with certain amounts of liquids...but I just wanted to know if there are special documents I can fill out to carry them on?

No fair. I wish med school required pre-meds to collect hearts.
