Hey all,

I'm a 3rd-year med student looking for insight into some
quality academic peds programs out there, that
you've either visited or heard about. I know
it's a pretty vague request, but I gotta start
my search somewhere.
Geography is not much of an issue, but I am
looking for a program that can help open the door
to an eventual fellowship. A program with happy
residents is a huge plus.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

One of my good friends is doing peds. She is more concentrated on the east coast and from talking to her good programs are Children's Hospital in Boston, CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadephia), UNC, University of Alabama, DC Children's, Hopkins. She also liked Carolinas in Charlotte, NC but that is more community based.

University of Cinncinnati has an outstanding program. Louisville is also pretty good, but not among that top group for academic reputation

The top two pediatrics programs in the country are 1) Boston Children's and 2) CHOP Childrens hospital of Philadelphia. There are many stong university level programs across the country.

Thanks a bunch for the input so far.
I've heard about a few of the ones mentioned, especially Boston Children's and CHOP.

But I'm curious about programs that don't spring to mind at first but are well known in
pedatric circles: for example, I recently heard that Iowa has a very strong pediatrics program, but I never would have thought so because, at least to me, it's not a "big name" like Harvard or UPenn.

So, are there other programs out there like Iowa,
that are solid academically but don't have
instant name recognition to the layperson?

Maimonides Medical Center in New York (Brooklyn, to be exact) has an excellent pediatrics program. The didactics are great, there is a broad patient base and their residents have gone on to fellowships at Hopkins, Columbia, Cornell, and CHOP. The program got excellent reviews on scutwork.com - take a look. I have done several rotations there and it was my 1st choice for residency. <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" /> They also have one of the highest Pediatrics specialty board pass rates in New York.

By the way, the program is also dually accredited (AOA and ACGME), a definite plus if you're from an osteopathic school.

Sorry about all the gremlins - I couldn't resist. Good luck!

Baylor College of Medicine is supposed to be pretty great.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll definitely look into them.
Any others that haven't been mentioned?

Check out UMDNJ @ Morristown. The program is very strong in a few areas and the residents are great. What fellowship are you interested in?

Maimonidies is in a warzone and virtually no english is spoken.

Stanford (Lucile Packard Children's Hospital) hasn't been mentioned yet. I'm biased because I worked in peds there for two years, but the residents were very happy, the residency director and his team are excellent, and most of the residents that I knew/talked to were able to get into fairly competitive fellowships.

Texas Children's (Baylor) is supposed to be really good, but there is a good amount of inbreeding there as well.

I don't know how good the program is, but I was extremely impressed by the Children's Hospital at Wash U.

With regard to Maimo being in a warzone, this is exaggerated. I have lived 4 blocks away from the hospital for the past 20 years and I can assure you that although the neighborhood is not exactly picturesque, it certainly not a war zone. I've never had any problems and I'm definitely not afraid to walk around.

just wanted to bump this up to see if i get more
responses.
thanks a bunch to those who have responded so far!

I've heard great things about CHOP, Cleveland (Rainbow Babies), Cincinatti, Harvard, and Stanford. Also check out the U of Rochester's program-I think it is reasonably well rated, the residents seem very happy, and it is definately an academic program with a bunch of fellowships offered, including general academic pediatrics.

CHP in Pittsburgh looks pretty good as well.

Columbia and Montefiore (NYC) are probably the two top pediatrics programs in NYC. Good name and good fellowships from both of those places.
