Hey, 3rd year med student here. I'll be applying for ophtho match next year and was wondering if anyone could give me some input on programs that have strong oculoplastics/reconstructive departments, as I always had an in plastics even before I decided on ophtho. I managed to land 3 weeks of plastics for my upcoming surgery rotation, so hopefully that could serve as a strong non-ophtho LOR. I saw Wisconsin and Cleveland mentioned when i did a search, but for the most part the threads never addressed specific programs. Any info is appreciated!

By your username, I guess you are in Illinois and a Cubs fan. I won't fault you for that. 😛

Anyway, I can only speak about one program with which I am very familiar. Krieger Eye Institute at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore is very strong on oculoplastics. They have a fellowship program, but the first year residents still get tons of exposure to the plastics' surgeries & clinics. The attendings are fantastic teachers, too. They also choose great fellows. The residency program is small and is not heavily research-based, so it depends what you are looking for. Nonetheless, there are plenty of opportunities for clinical research if interested. Hope this helps.

Though quite a few negatives from what I've heard, EVMS did hire a new attending at their VA who is oculoplastics trained and, since she arrived, have been doing as many oculoplastics procedures as anywhere in the country. However, graduating from EVMS would not look as good as many other programs when applying for fellowship, no matter how many blephs/ptosis repairs you have done.

There are more programs in number that will give you good oculoplastics exposure than the number of programs that have oculoplastic fellowships associated with them. I would even suggest that you would be better off as a resident somewhere where there were several oculoplastic attendings on staff but no fellowship program in plastics. In that case, you get more direct experience with the attending surgeons and also more subspecialty LORs, but you don't have to share cases with a fellow.

Could you name a few such programs?

Mayo is a great place to go for plastics.
