I'm currently a rising Junior at my undergrad insituation (UA). I'm a Communication Studies major, Biology minor (Pre-Dental). I just want some guidance on what I should improve on (outside of grades).

My GPA is currently at a 3.5 (will definitely rise) and my science GPA is not so good (it's in the lower 3.0s). I've started studying for the DAT and I plan on taking it in next Spring. I'm pretty good at science I just tend to always slack off towards the end of the semester (made all B's in my science courses thus far).

My top 3 schools are:

UAB
Meharry
Howard

I am African American and I've always wanted to attend a rich historical African American school, hence the selection of Meharry and Howard. I do come from a very different background and I am first generation, poverty level household, single parent household so I am diverse in that sense but I don't want to ride on my personal issues when applying?

I'm well involved on campus from Student Coordinator of Orientation, College Ambassador, Million Dollar Band drum line, etc.

My questions are:
Aside from grades what else should I be trying to improve?
How's the atmosphere in Meharry and Howard?
What does the HPSP scholarship entail?
Any shadowing tips?

You won't have to ride on personal issues. The application will display your diverse background though asking race, other questions. You could write some things about poverty and what you may have been pertaining to dental needs not being met in certain levels of income. DAT and GPA are important, just about king.
