So I come looking for some advice, here's the situation:
I've been accepted to an OOS school and have paid the deposit to hold my seat. Currently that's my only acceptance, but I'm on the wait-list at 3 other schools, one of which is my state school and top choice.
What I can't figure out it is, should I sit at home, and wait for my state school, or should I leave early in the summer for the OOS school? The problem that moving OOS poses is that I want to get a roommate, but then how do I tell them that I might NOT be attending the school?

Maybe someone has been in a similiar situation, but I don't want to sign a lease and all that stuff, and realize that I'm stuck paying for a place that I don't even end up using (if I get into my state school). I also don't want to get a roommate, and then ditch them at the last moment. 🙁

I hope this question makes sense, and I hope that all those wise SDN people can offer some suggestions!

P.s. this is my first post, so bear with me!

I think your situation is what "temporary housing" was desgiend for.

Granted, you will need to clarify a point. Do you mean you want to get a roommate through the school (as in on-campus housing) or that you want to have a roommate for the year (as in any one off craigslist that is compatible) or, and this is what I think you mean, an off-campus apartment with a roommate from the medical school.

I'm going with the assumption that it is the last one (hence signing the lease). In your shoes, I would move to the OOS school close to when it starts (a week before or so). I would actually advice getting temporary housing in the area until the last possible moment. At that point go ahead and find a roommate and sign a lease (make sure that you can break it for a fee and budget it in). Be upfront with the roommate about the possibility. There will be people that will not want to live with you because of this, but there are people that will understand as well.

Quite honestly, I would advice against a roommate unless you absolutely have to, but maybe it's just me. I like studying in absolute silence in my room and a roommate is a drag. You'll get to know your medical school class (remember high school) intimitately either way.

I am in almost exactly this same situation. In OOS, waiting on dream school and state school. I've decided to completely wait it out, as the school I'm in now does not start until september 1, which gives me some leeway. I figure if I get off one of the WL's I'll be so happy that first year housing won't matter as much

This is unrelated to housing specifically, but it sounds to me that you would highly prefer to stay IS as opposed to going OOS - if that's the case, send a letter of interest or letter of intent to you top school. Depending on the school, that may help expedite the process of you getting off a waitlist.

I am sure your roommate wont mind you ditching him/her, given that you still pay your rent. ^_^
