Hello everyone during a student interview is it appropriate to call them by their first name or only Mr/Ms last name like they were a faculty member. I ask since last time I had a interview with a student I said Ms. (last name) and she right away said to call her by her first name. I have another student interviewer coming up and I was wondering if I should just call them by their first name? Thanks!

Refer to them however you are introduced. If you walk in, shake hands, and they say "Hello ___, I'm Sarah, an MS-4 at State University SOM," then you call her Sarah. If they say both names, go with Ms./Mr. until told not to.

If I were interviewing and someone called me Mr./Ms/whatever I'd be like wtf?

When do you find the need to refer to them by anything during the interview?

Good question. Any student interviewers who'd like to provide their perspective? @NickNaylor perhaps?
Student interviewer here. First name is almost always going to be fine. I certainly wouldn't care, and I would go so far as to say that anyone who does needs to calm it down a few notches.

Maybe it's a California thing, but I'd be surprised if someone called me mister. It's de facto here to just go by the first name, unless your interviewer is faculty. That being said, I would just think the interviewee was being professional if he or she first addressed me as mister---no "minus points"; I won't think you're a square.

Can't they just wait another year or two to start introducing themselves as Dr so and so?

I once observed an interaction during shadowing where a very old physician asked a medical student to introduce himself by Mr. Last name. I think it is weird because no one associates medical professionals with a title of Mr/Ms. Even nurse practitioners introduce themselves by their first name!

Thanks everyone, I think ill just go with the first name basis then 😛. I figured its always better to be to formal but it did seem kind of odd to me to call someone my age mr/ms also.

I'd prefer that over attendings who introduce me as Dr. _______. Not even student doctor. Just doctor. Nooo.

I introduce myself as FirstName LastName.

I usually introduce myself by my first name and prefer that interviewees call me by my first name. I think it would be weird for people close to my age to call me Mr.

I always feel so awkward when attendings do that :\, or when patients confuse me for one.
