Hi guys,

So I belong to my school's student ASHP chapter and we really want to present at Midyear. The problem is we aren't sure what to do. Is there anyone who has presented a poster at midyear that could help me find a place to get ideas. I am not asking anyone to GIVE me their ideas, but a little advice where to get started would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!🙂

I presented last year. It's best to talk to professors (especially ones who are specialized in the areas you like). Try browsing old abstracts, journals, even med student's abstracts to see what kind of work is expected. If you've done something interesting on a rotation, present it. Talk to your preceptors about case presentations. Find out what professors do research and try to get in on it. There's a million possibilities. =)

I am not presenting at ASHP but I am presenting at ACCP. I just emailed a professor that I knew and have been working on a project since this spring.

If you're an intern at a hospital and have participated in a project, then you can present the findings.... random example... you guys decided to give daily warfarin at 5pm instead of 9am...to make sure INR was available before the dose is administered. Then you can do a restrospective review and see how the change in administration time affected INR range....

So, an idea can stem from a Performance Improvement Process Implementation.

Talk to your pharmacist and/or clinical manager.

I presented last year in Vegas. I was able to do a retrospective chart review project while on 4th year rotations at a local hospital. You can see other types of projects presented such as MUEs or surveys. I think the most important thing is to find something you are interested in and find a preceptor/professor that is willing to guide you along the way. Most of the work is up to you anyway regarding abstract submission, IRB submission (if necessary), and preparing the poster. Another student and I pretty much did everything involved with the project; the preceptors were there to answer questions, and provide feedback. I personally highly recommend it because it is a great initial experience with formulating a research project, navigating the IRB, data collection, and presenting results, especially if you plan on working in research as a career or doing a residency.
I also know that student ASHP chapters can present a poster that details chapter events, initiatives, etc. in their own session (I'm not sure if you are referring to this or not). Haven't personally been involved in this, but I believe our chapter does this every year.

Thanks for the tips. I am going to report back to the other members and see what they think 🙂

The schedule should be printed on your ASHP supplied pocket protector.....Just look down at your shirt pocket.....
 I could see Enigma wearing a pocket protector and then begging a nurse to borrow his pen. "Oh please nurse lady, borrow my pen. I don't care about your varicose veins, your dimples and granny panties that I can see straight through your white pants, or that late 80's hairstyle that you refuse to update. You're still hot, because you're just a nurse. You won't ask me questions or use your brain to find a pen. Please, borrow mine. Just reach into this little ASHP pocket protector here. I got it at last year's convention when I was a guest speaker. I did this super cool PowerPoint presentation about catheter tubing and colonoscopy kits."

where is mid-year?

i think i heard Orlando, FL?

when is it?

It is in Orlando and it is Dec. 7th-11th. And yes I knew that off of the top of my head. I guess that I am just a pharmacy nerd. Oh well, I will deal w/ it.

It should be in Vegas every year. It's just not a good time without drinking and gambling.

Quit your b*tchin where ASHP is....doesn't matter where it is. If you're fun, you'll have fun.

Growing up in Jax = may too many trips to Orlando in my lifetime. Bring on the casinos. Maybe there's an indian reservation around there.

I'm totally down with a field trip to go drinking/gambling on the res.

Like I said, I'm really quite good at both.

OK to all people at midyear...we will go on a field trip to an Indian reservation. Wooooo!

One way to gain experience presenting nationally -- present a clinical pearl at the ASHP Great eXpectations Conference August 24, 2008 in New York City. [Pearls are quick, light-toned presentations (<10 min) designed to convey a single idea or concept useful in day-to-day practice but not widely known or published.]

Not only would you get to present at a national forum, but it's an awesome conference just for us. FYI - early bird registration closes 7/28 and hotel cut-off is 7/31. There are group discounts available too.

I'm presenting a poster at FSHP but it's a silly topic and more than likely won't win. But I'm looking forward to going. FSHP meetings are always good times.
