from the interview circuit, it does appear that psych is becoming fairly competitive this year.

I have heard that there are 22 UCSF grads going into psych this year. 😱 10 from Harvard, 10 from Univ. of Pennsylvania and 12 from Cornell? Can other people verify those numbers or indicate how many people from your schools are applying to psych this year?

I am sure those 22 UCSF kids will take up most of the spots at top psych programs this year 😉

uhm....i am sure that my rank list will contain maybe 10 programs... not taking any chances in this year.

I have heard there are quite a few people from certain schools applying in psych this year. Great for psych in general, kinda scary for the rest of us applying!

At UCLA, the PD did say he had received over 20 UCSF apps this year. From my school, we have about the same as we do every year.

This year we have 12 applying to psych from Texas. Last year it was 2.

Anyone care to propose a theory as to why we're seeing this resurgence of interest in psych?

Good lifestyle, reasonable hours, decent pay, range of opportunities for specialization (child & adolescent, geriatric, forensic, addiction, psychosomatic), explosion of knowledge in biological psychiatry in recent years.

I have been hearing those numbers on the interview trail also. I feel bad for those UCSF students. The top CA programs are not going to fill their spots with all UCSF grads. I've talked to some people in admissions and it's easier for good people from top east coast schools to match into a UCLA NPI for instance because they tend to view it as an accomplishment if they can lure someone from the east coast into their program.

Luck of the draw year-by-year I guess.
