I think it depends largely on your learning style. If you tend to do better in a classroom setting you may want to consider one of the test prep programs. I only studied from the Manhattan prep book/flashcards and the ETS prep book and did fine.

I can't speak to the Kaplan course, but take the Kaplan tests with a grain of salt. I took a Kaplan test first and my verbal was mid 150's. I took the two tests from ETS and got 170's. My real GRE was 169. I've heard other people complain before that they didn't think the Kaplan test scores seemed in line with the other tests. I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted you to score low on practice tests so your real score looked like growth. I know a lot of people who didn't think the Kaplan course was worth the cost to them, but it probably depends on how you're doing. If you need a classroom setting or if you need more structure than studying on your own then it might be worth it.

I would study from books, if you have the discipline to actually study on a daily basis.

I ordered the Kaplan books from Amazon and went through them that way - Memorized 10 vocab words a day and did 1 section of material in each book for each day (spent about 2-3 hours on GRE/day)... Found them to be very helpful, but I would agree with the user above. All of my Kaplan practice test scores were lower than my actual test day score. I didn't mind it because it motivated me to study harder to actually see improvement on my Kaplan tests, which (I think) also made me do better on the real test.

Thanks guys! I really do think I am going to stick with the books and hopefully do well

I've used the Kaplan books and vocab flashcards. It was pretty straightforward. In the quantitative section it shows some shortcuts and patterns that you can use.

I was just about to ask the same question that you've posted. Have you started the Kaplan program yet? Will you give me any advice on how the program is?
