Just wanting to get input from others on what their study method is for any class (chem, bio, calc, etc)

I know I am still trying to find my perfect method and getting into the thick of my science classes I would like to get input from other students..

Best,

B

When it comes to memorizing a bunch of stuff, I find that flashcards work well for me. I also read the material once (the first pass), go back and highlight the important parts, and then write down the highlighted parts that I am having trouble remembering into a notebook (separate from the flashcards). Of course I will go back and read trouble areas again, but that's been my system for Bio.

When I don't understand a concept, I turn to YouTube. There's SO many great tutorials out there and they can often explain things in a clearer fashion than my prof can. If that fails, I get a tutor.

When it comes to solving problems, practice makes perfect. I try to understand the concept, and when I do I just do a bunch of problems until I'm not getting any wrong .

Repetition is they key. I try and spend 1-2 hours a day going over the material I have learned. The week before test I go for 3-4 hours. It has worked out perfect for me the past 2 years. Straight A's.

Chem/physics/math...just read over the material and then do millions of practice problems.

Bio and other classes with just thousands of facts...I read the material slowly while making an outline/review pages of all the important stuff. To memorize I like making lists of things b/c it is easy to remember how many things are in the list so that you recognize if you are missing something right away. I write the lists over and over again on scrap paper. When I get down 5 lists of things I write down all of the 5 lists from memory and then add another list and keep doing that. I remember everything when doing this. Works especially well for biochemical pathways.

Everything everybody else has said plus:

- Never underestimate the power of prereading (or at least taking a quick look at) the material before lecture.

- Pay attention during the lecture and try to participate by asking/answering questions.

- If you feel you have a good enough handle on the material try, to tutor someone else.
