I read and hear many accounts of people who say the material they've been tested on wasn't found in any of the books they had studied. I am just curious where people tried to look and find them?

I think the point is that they weren't prepared and therefore couldn't find them anywhere.... the exam always has a few questions which test stuff that comes out of nowhere. I don't know why, but it's routine.

But so, would reading journals such as NEJM or Trends in biochemistry helped people, given the focus on laboratory medicine and biochemistry on some of the questions?

I vote yes. You should definitely read NEJM for your board prep. 😉
