I’m probably going to have to remediate an interprofessional education pass/fail course worth 0.5 credits because I supposedly did not turn in an assignment on time. It’s so stupid I’m having difficulty processing it.

Anyways, how will this affect my residency application in the future? I’m a first year, my grades are great, I have good extracurriculars so far and am beginning research soon.

Best bet is to go forward as your were before and make to appropriate changes (i.e., develop a system) to be sure a silly slipup like that doesn't happen again. I think it's unlikely to make a difference in most situations if everything else is in order.

“Supposedly” ? You either did or didn’t. Don’t have any more slip ups and if asked during residency interview then you are truthful. You didn’t have the proper planning technique and overlooked a vital assignment causing you to fail. Since then you’ve instituted whatever plan you choose to not have this happen again. In our physician working life, you will have tons of deadlines with different paperwork that you have to turn in. And you have to keep it straight. You can’t overlook it. I use Google Calendar and put in deadlines even if they are 6-9 months out because then I have an external brain to remember things for me. It only gets harder as you get more and more busy.

It will say P* and I guess the star denotes remediation. It won’t affect my GPA or slow my progress. I would just have to write a short essay to remediate. This isn’t all set in stone yet but if it is then I want to know how this could affect my future. Like how big of a deal is this?

Man, DO schools are meant to fail their students. I have been working hard this year to make sure I get all good grades and evaluations from each rotation, never missed anything but one third-year mindless online open book OMM quiz last week, and they want to fail me for the entire meaningless OMM online course now

I agree that's harsh, but you shouldn't be missing anything without a good excuse. It's unprofessional to no-show or show up late, and you will go nowhere in this field if you can't consistently be professional. You'll get chewed out on clinical rotations, and it's even worse as a resident. You guys are adults. Gotta step it up.

No there are between 7-10 assignments. Mostly peer evaluation forms. I missed a single peer evaluation form and thus failed the class. I understand the red flags that come with med students who fail their systems courses and/or have to repeat a year but I have no clue what something like this will look like to program directors.

You are right I don't have any excuse, but why can schools miss/mess things up with no excuse, how can professors be late to our classes without penalty but students? And I don't agree to show up late is unprofessional, there are tons of attendings/residents/patients show up/do things late. About how many times surgeries/clinic appointments are on time as scheduled? Are you always able to see your patients on time as booked? There should always be a grace/fluid period

you need to file an appeal as I am trying to do that. This is insane like missing one thing out of ten. Plus these are all the non-sense classes that have nothing to do with our medical education. It is not like we miss our shelf exam or don't show up for the clinic ... other important things.

No it’s worth 25 points out of 100 which normally wouldn’t be an issue except for this class requires an 80% to pass.

Seriously? You think patients don't get charged if they are late or missed an appt? You haven't been to the doctors lately as all of mine have big signs indicating you will be charged for missing an appointment. A surgeon shows up late for a case. You think they don't get reported and risk losing their prime start times? If you are chronically late in the office and the office manager,( your Boss), will have to pay OT to the staff because you can't see patients fast enough. Do you think you aren't going to receive a counseling session and possibly have your contract non renewed? I get it. You're mad because you got your knuckles cracked for a class you consider busy work. We all have made some bad choices. Own it and move on. Plenty of mindless scut work awaits you as an attending. Get used to it. It's the cost of doing business.

Doing peer reviews and giving feedback is a part of medical education. I don’t think it’s a reason to fail someone but it definitely is not nothing to do with med Ed. Most residents and attendings suck at giving feedback. This may be their feeble attempt to try and introduce it early so the next generation has better skills

No advice but I commiserate with you on that class and its ability to be a pain.

We have the exact same thing - 0.5 credits, P/F - but ours is only 1-2 assignments. The PA who runs it does not communicate, period, you have to remember to check the Canvas periodically and hope you catch the assignment during its open window. Multiple faculty didn't show up to their workshops one quarter, because they didn't know they were supposed to... it's that level of unorganized.
At least she doesn't appear to fail people though, you just get an "incomplete" placeholder on your transcript until you ask her to reopen the assignment so you can get your P.

I don't know what goes on behind the scenes for faculty, attendings, etc. as far as professionalism issues go, but I do think it's unfair when it only seems to go one way. We don't know if our comments about unprofessional behavior go straight into a trash can, or if they get dealt with somehow & we just don't know about it.

Just to follow up, I met with my clinical mentor and she said this was absolutely not something to worry about especially if this is the only mistake on my app. However, it looks like remediation will actually result in a normal Pass so thank God for that

I am not talking about late for like an hour or half day, I am talking about being late not talking about no show. My school expects us to be on time on everything, being to a class, lab, exam 15 mins before start time otherwise threatens to fail us but then they often have us wait up to an hour for these things. Students get kicked out the lab because they show up late but the professors come in late with no apology. I missed the quiz because I thought the due date wrong literally less than one day late. I told them I wanted to submit it but they closed the assignment. I bet you are not of these insane DO faculties.

You missed a deadline. It happens. Trying to justify your mistake by pointing out others are late with no consequences doesn't enhance your position. This is about you, not them. One day, one week, one hour doesn't matter, you missed the deadline for the assignment and didn't meet expectations. Now, if you reflect on what happened and it was just overlooked, then own it and move on. It was a mistake. If this has happened before or is a frequent occurrence, then consider changing your mindset and behavior. Thinking punctuality and deadlines aren't a big deal will allow episodes like this to be more common. Life is full of choices, make good ones and life is easier.

Exactly. My whole goal was for my admin to not know my name. I wanted them to mispronounce my name at graduation

If you'll get a plain pass on your transcript and it won't be mentioned in your MSPE, then you're completely in the clear. But, you should assume that if something like this happens again, you won't get the same result.
