I am currently involved in a volunteer clinical research program through my local hospital (really cool program, volunteer in the ER and screen patients to participate in various research studies going on in the ED). The physician who runs the program says that he will be willing to write me a LOR for med school but only after I've logged 100+ hours. The problem is that this will probably not be until middle/late June. I want to submit my AMCAS application asap (ie 6/1, 6/2) however I also think this will be a great letter to add to my application. What is the best way to go about this? Wait to submit AMCAS, submit this letter later? Any thoughts/ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Just go ahead and submit your primary. You don't submit LOR's until secondary. You'll be fine.

If letters are only submitted until secondaries then why is there a section on the AMCAS for letters? I guess I'm just confused about how and when letters are submitted. Any insight would be appreciated. I will be using a committee letter fwiw.

Letters go when amcas sends them. Your file at School X is complete when they have received your primary, secondary, letter(s), and/or any other required items.

The idea is that the faster you're complete, the faster you can be reviewed. The faster you are reviewed, the faster you can be interviewed.🙂

There is an option to submit your primary application even if you don't have all your letters in. Once you do get that letter from the physician you work with, you can then upload that letter to AMCAS and submit it. Your question can also be answered on the AMCAS website. https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/amcas/faqs/148162/amcas_2010_faqs-17.12.html I would suggest reading those questions first before coming to SDN to ask. I'm sure there's also previous threads that talked about this. Do a search. Many questions have been asked over and over again.
