Here's the list of DO schools I am going to submit the primary app to tomorrow. As an NY resident, I'd definitely appreciate any hints about which of these schools heavily favor in-state applicants and should thus be crossed off my list of schools to apply to. I have heard this about Ohio, Oklahoma, PCOM-Philadelphia, Michigan State, Nova Southeastern and UMDNJ. Anyway, here is the list of 20 schools. If we eliminate those six that I've marked as heavily favoring in-state applicants then I have 14. I would also really appreciate any suggestions you folks may have regarding schools I should add to the list.

Lake Erie - Erie branch
NYCOM
PCOM - Philadelphia (heavily favors in-state?)
PCOM - Georgia (heavily favors in-state?)
Touro - Harlem
Touro - California
Touro - Nevada
Western COM
UMDNJ-SOM
Nova Southeastern (heavily favors in-state?)
VCOM - Virginia
AT Still - Kirksville
AT Still - Arizona
Des Moines COM
Kansas City COM
Michigan State COM (heavily favors in-state?)
Midwestern - Chicago COM
Midwestern - Arizona COM
Ohio COM (heavily favors in-state?)
Oklahoma State COM (heavily favors in-state?)

Can't apply to New England COM because their entry in the book says they require
biochem. I don't have biochem. No way around this right?

Stats:
non-traditional applicant, 3.34 cGPA, 3.66 science GPA, 3.72 post-bac GPA(consisting of the eight pre-reqs), 26R MCAT (9P, 9V, 8P)

-Very solid PS with compelling personal story.
-Very solid letters of recommendation.
-Good extracurriculars
-Law degree
-Wide variety of life experiences

If you don't have biochem you can't apply to DMU either. You could always still take biochem in the spring though. I was accepted in September and didn't take biochem until the following spring.

I don't think Nova has a big instate preference - they just have lower instate tuition and probably a larger # of Florida applicants.

Since it's kind of late in the cycle and your stats are borderline, it's probably best to apply to as many schools as you can afford that you would be happy attending (and that don't have crazy OOS tuition or preferences). I didn't apply to most of the other schools you listed with ?s about IS preference, but from reading on SDN it seems that PCOM has a regional preference, Ohio wants an agreement to practice in the state for several yrs, and Mich has super high OOS tuition.

Good luck!

You don't need biochem to apply, but if you don't plan on taking it, take off DMU and KCUMB (they also need genetics). Also if you don't like ohio and you aren't in state, drop that one because they are in state heavy and they require a 5 year contract for OOS where you have to practice in ohio. I am in iowa and I got an interview at NSU so I don't think they are heavy in state. MSU has a ton of IS students but it is because their OOS tuition is $80k. OSU I think heavily favors IS. Only know the schools I applied to or was interested in applying. You can check my mdapps for those schools. Anything not on my list is not my strong point.

LMU-DCOM is historically very non-traditional friendly, you might consider adding them to your list.

PCOM really favors in-state, but I think they have started giving out interviews around the state. During my interview at PCOM-GA, there was someone from Alabama and another from Florida. Hopefully you will get an interview too. Good luck :luck:

Take off PNWU, they're 87% in-region. NSU is around 45% in-state, I think. PCOM is heavy in-state, I imagine their GA campus is too. You could add RVU in Colorado, especially if you're down with the military.

Pacific northwest HEAVILY favors IS and you would be wasting your money since you aren't from that region. Cross that one off. And I have also heard Pikeville heavily favors IS. If you would be willing to take biochem and genetics (for KC only) upon acceptance add those back in. For example, I don't have genetics and didn't indicate I planned to take it, but I told KCUMB that I would take it if I got accepted and chose to attend and they accepted me. So add those if you would take biochem if you had to.

I am originally from Ohio. I have heard that Ohio State is big on in state.

Thanks guys,

Okay, the primary app has been submitted. Would you guys recommend that I get all secondaries completed using old threads so that I can send the apps in as soon as I get them? Also, do you guys know if most DO schools mail you secondaries or if you do them online? Lastly, do any of these schools screen for secondaries? I don't want to complete them early for schools that do because that would be a waste.

I submitted to the 16 schools listed above plus Western-Lebanon branch. Sound good?

Thanks!

Yes, definitley prewrite them.

They usually send them via email, and direct you to a website where you complete them and submit them online.

You can always change your school list during and after verification. But the list looks fine to me. Schools so screen for secondaries, but all your stats seem above the screenining requirement. So you should be fine.

Good luck! 😎
