I would like to practice general surgery for a few years, pay off debt--house, etc. then go back and sub specialize. Is this possible? Thanks.

edit: I realize that I would be losing four years income as a subspecialist.

1. You're listed as a Pre-Med, so you should worry about that later.

2. Sure, you can go back and do a fellowship later, but it will be harder to secure a position. Programs are wary of people who are coming back -- either they are dissatisfied by what they're doing or they just won't be happy no matter what they do. Also, we're not sure that they know how to be a trainee again. That's a big step backwards for most people.

3. It's substantially harder to go from an income of $250K/year to a fellow's income of $65K/year.

4. Why not just get all of the training that you want up front??

Do you possess a particular set of skills? Perhaps acquired over a very long career?

Good idea, almost all of us have thought about it.

Probably could only work if...

- you are disciplined to pay your loans, etc

- you are single.

Good luck
