Summer research jobs that are not "programs"?

I'm interested in doing research this summer, but I hear that most of the research programs at universities are very competitive. Is there a way to get some research experience (clinical or bench, whatever) without applying to these programs?

Or if anyone else has good job suggestions, I'd like those too
