i decided to do at least some snooping on my own.. i think the jhu sip is for anyone considering any md degree and not just limited to phd. also some of the nih programs state the same thing. thanks for your input though..

edit: and which smdep program site did you attend? im doing smdep this summer!

I did the Nebraska one last summer.

That sounds like a good reason to try research. If you are at a university that has research going on you could always try contacting PI's to try your hand at it that way. Summer programs are very competitive and often value prior research experience very highly so doing some previous research at your own university may help you with admission.

I got a phone call about two weeks ago from a 510 number, but I ignored it. Then I got another phone call on Friday, March 14th. They told me I had until this past Friday to reply. I think they're calling in sets because I recall the application said not to expect anything until the end of March.

thanks for the advice!
i'm currently gathering advice from recent graduates and upperclassmen on how to approach getting lab positions. it's too bad that i'm not going to have time to do any research until next semester..

i was also curious about how doing research for college credit works. i think i might look into that as well, though it's probably only for upperclassmen fulfilling major requirements.

i withdrew from the purdue and ucsd program. looks like i'm for sure going to ucsf with no regrets unless i get into the uw program.

I'm pretty sure we applied to the same programs. I got an email rejection from columbia this morning too.

Did you apply to WashU?
 
i couldnt find the washu program when i was applying, and i didnt really apply to many.. mainly targeting amgen, and then added a bunch of programs i found and applied to but got rejected from as a freshman two years ago. haha.
 
So this process is done for me. Rejections: UCSF, UCSD, Stanford, Columbia, MIT. Waitlist: UCLA. Accepted: UWash. So I'm going to UWash Amgen this summer and I'm super excited. If anyone has any prior experience with this program, let me know because I can't wait, and I want to know what I can be expecting.
 
Mayo rejection... still holding off hope for WashU... anyone else?

i got into smdep at nebraska, wash u, case western (i declined already)
nebraska, john hopkins basic science SIP, and alternate for Baylor.

When I spoke to Columbia a week ago, they informed me that they have given out all of their acceptances. I don't know if everyone took their spot however. But it sounds like they are finished, and yes, I did get a rejection email. Good luck with the rest of your apps.
 
Rejected: Mayo Clinic, Gestner-Sloan Kettering, Dialysis Clinic, Nebraska (Internal Medicine).

Haven't heard from:

Des Moines University, Nebraska (pediatrics)...

But, I'm a freshman right now and assumed my best shot would be Des Moines and Nebraska. Sure enough, those are the two I'm waiting from. Anyone heard from the two?

Rejected: Too many to name but highlights are: Columbia, Mayo, MIT, Berkeley, UCSF, UCLA, Northwestern, etc.

Waiting on: Baylor SMART, UChicago, WashU, U of Wash.

Anyone hear from WashU? I'm still holding out for them but wonder if they will just not tell me anything and assume I know it's a rejection. If anyone has heard anything from them, please let me know!
 
So far, rejected: Einstein College, Hartford Hospital, UCSF

Accepted: U Chicago

Pending: NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, Harvard Stem Cell Institute


I had been freaking out for a few weeks. I thought Hartford and UCSF were my safest bets but apparently not. U Chicago contacted me Friday afternoon, though.

Given the other results, I don't think Harvard will take me, and NYU isn't as appealing (I'd have to live at home and it pays less than half of what Chicago is offering), so it looks like I'll be in Chicago this summer. Anyone have any feedback on their program?

I haven't heard from WashU in St. Louis BioMedRAP as well...would be nice to hear from them...need closure
 
Game over for me. I accepted an offer at Princeton this morning!

I hear from Wash U a couple hours after that, rejected of course!

Yup, I heard from Wash U this afternoon, got rejected as well!

It's funny how they so eloquently say you're a "highly qualified" applicant, but it's always the same excuse of not having room for you....lol

For anyone who is non-white (Black, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American), consider summer research with NIDA, you can google it. I don't know how "prestigious" it is (lol I didn't realize there was a ranking of summer research programs, but I guess this is the kind of thing I should expect from premeds), but it is a pretty solid experience. Sites are in all 50 states and include both clinical and basic science research experiences, so it really can accommodate any kind of research interest. No one's asking for future PhDs, they just want to get more minorities represented in research that is so relevant to them so that they will consider participating again later in life. There's also no strict age requirement...technically even high school students can apply. You can PM me for more info. The deadline is usually pretty late in the season, although this year's deadline was 2 weeks ago.

rejected from uw here too. guess no regrets for choosing ucsf.. lol. i sort of wanted to enjoy seattle weather. i looove it there. oh well. california is great as well.
 
Damn, lucky you guys for getting accepted. The closest research university to where I live is Stanford, Berkeley and UCSF, and I can't afford the commute there for the summer.

I was semi interested in the PhD route, but with the luck most my family gets with degrees....I'll pass.
 
i applied to places out of my college, cause.. well i go to public state university an hour away from my home, and while i dorm during the school year, i dont dorm during summer, and it's a pain to commute. also california >> illinois.

actually ucsf and berkely and stanford offer free housing for the amgen program.

These programs have several benefits:

1) They typically provide more actual research experience and insight into what it's like to be a researcher than applying for a job in a lab at your local university. Typically those jobs include washing beakers or cleaning fruit fly cages, which isn't exactly research. It can be years before one actually gets to participate in the interesting parts...

2) It allows for people who have little to no research going on at their current institutions to gain research experience.

3) It allows people to experience new parts of the country, with room (and sometimes board) paid. It has allowed for me to go places I hadn't ever really thought about going, and found that I loved it there.

4) It also allows for people to experience research in different environments. For example the research environment at a big name institution is often different than a smaller less known institution.

5) Some people simply don't have the time during the school year to do research, but are still curious about it. This allows them to try it out during the summer when they actually have time to commit 40+ hrs/week to it.

I'm sure there are more reasons, but those are some of mine. I did one last summer as well, and loved the experience. It was great to live in another part of the country for the summer and experience a different academic environment as well.
 
Waiting to hear from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's summer research internship program... this is only their second year with it

I just applied a week ago (as soon as a hematologist connection sent me the info) and had an interview today.
 
I received my official acceptance notification to the SURF program at University of Rochester School of Medicine today.
 
anyone get in MD Anderson SURP? Anyone done it before that can give some insight on how it is? I just found out I got accepted yesterday. I wish i had applied to more but that was the only one I applied to...good thing i got in.

I hope that I don't sound stupid, but how does one go about getting these opportunities or better that find them? Who is qualified to apply? How do you do them if they are out of your state, like do they give you stipends? I mean I know some stuff like some health institutes for instance will have fellowship things for the summer for graduates and undergraduates and just volunteers. I am serious because I want to get myself involved with research.

I was notified that I got into Baylor SMART in Mid March. I had also applied to M.D. Anderson's SURP, but I called them up and they said that they were running behind and will be giving out notifications starting in mid April ish. I couldn't pass up on the Baylor opportunity while waiting on M.D. Anderson so I accepted the Baylor one right away.

M.D. anderson notified me friday night that I was accepted. Apparently, only 12 people were accepted, and they were notified the previous friday April 11th or somethin like that. On the acceptance email that i recieved on the 18th it said that they were able to extend me an acceptance or whatever. Thats interesting because I thought M.D. anderson would be accepting a lot more...

isnt on-campus housing usually free in these programs?
and aren't stipends usually like $2,000-$4,000?
