Originally I was going to research with a pathologist at UCIMC over the summer, but it fell through due to "administrative obstacles". I'd rather do the research at the hospital rather than the main campus, but most of the pathologist researchers are at the main campus.

For LOR purposes, would it matter if I did it with someone in another field (meaning: would the possible intra-field connections matter more than the research)? His research is with oncology.

No. A good LOR is a good LOR. I suppose a good LOR from a well known and respected pathologist is a bit better, all things being equal, but as I like to say about "all things being equal," all things are never equal. If you want to stay there for your residency it would of course be better (but certainly not required) to do research with the pathologists.

Yaah, thanks for the advice.

How about doing research in psychiatry? The guy I'm talking to doesn't do wet bench, which is my background. Psych is my other interest, but I don't think that it's something that overlaps too much with path. Eek!

Unless it's some sort of molecular neurobiology related to psych, well, yeah I think that might be a problem in terms of showing some sort of cross-over or interest in Pathology, since Psych in a lot of ways could be seen as the antithesis of Pathology: You spend all your time talking to patients, you have very little in the way of objective measures or lab tests to aid diagnosis, etc.

Just my opinion tho...
