my original plan was to take 1 class per summer session (2 total) but after rethinking everything I am leaning towards 2 classes per session

If I take gchem 1& 2 w/ lab and work 40hrs a week will I have time to fit another class in?

sure why not...

but why would you?

I can relate to why this poster would be doing such a thing.. some of us aren't getting any younger, but still have quite a ways to go class-wise.... and can't afford not to work a full-time job. It gets a little frustrating.

I'd say your ability to do a short chem 1 & 2 as well as another course probably depends on what your other obligations are outside of work/school, as well as your study skills.

Good luck... I'm kicking myself in the a$$ for dropping chem last semester. 🙁

my other obligations are that i am married...but my wife and i are clear on what kind of commitment this is going to take

the reason i want to do this is because of my full-time job this would literally cut a year off and allow me to take the MCAT next april and start applying next year, otherwise im looking at class of 2011...ugh

What other class are you going to take, another science? How hectic is your work schedule? I work 40 hours a week, go to school at night and have two little boys - I figure if I can do it, anybody can. But then I'm also fortunate that I occasionally have some "down time" at work when I'm able to get studying done.

i work in television news and on average, I have about 2 hrs a day downtime if not more...if i just eat at my desk it could up to three hours...

Here is my plan:

Summer I:

Calculus
GChem 1 w/lab

Summer 2:
Bio 2 w/ lab
GChem 2 w/lab

Actually, the first one doesn't bother me so much as the second one with two labs...

Go for it, but realize you'll be working +80 hours per week. Very do-able. Chem isn't all that difficult. Just do lots of problems and keep flashcards with you at work (I speak from experience on this one).

i mean if you can fit it into your schedule....go on ahead...

but make sure you do have some time to study because it is summer school and it is impacted.

i took 10 units over one summer and worked full time and it was ok.

but then again im used to it because i do 40+ over the semester and get up to the 20 units a semester range. however my grades did suffer. so that is a possibility.

the ones with the two labs should be ok. the labs will cut into your working time of course but the labs themselves should not be too stressful. i liked my labs. good way to meet some friends in the class so that you can have some support whenever you have a question.

thanks for the advice guys

I worked a demanding and stressful research job for a year and took two classes each semester (e.g. biochemistry and english). It was rough, but I still did well. So I say it's doable, but no sense in taking that extra class if you don't have to. It can get time-consuming.

I worked as a researcher (40hrs/week) and some other crap job (5hrs / week) as well as taking 25hrs/ week of classes in the summer. Its's called HELL.

I worked from 9am - 8pm everyday (45 min lunch), 7 days a week. THEN I started to study... I could never get more than 2 hours/day in... It's amazing how much time is spent on necessity tasks such as going to the bathroom, eating, bathing, keeping clean clothes etc. You will not have a life.

You better have some real dummies in your class.... thats your warning. Do you realize you'll be competing against students who consider it a rough day when they have to go to all their classes and only get 4 hours of pool and beer time that day? From my experience, medical school will take the boring guy with A's in the subject you listed over the guy who worked all those hours and got B's. Idiotic, but the way the game works.
