I saw the other thread where students were competing over grades and I like the idea- lets do the same for summer. If you aren't in classes but are doing an internship or research project please post about that here as well 🙂

I'm in maymester global issues- a three week, every day class. Then for standard summer I'm taking human growth and development(EPY) and Chem 1. Should be a pretty smooth ride, except I haven't been in traditional classes in about 3 years. :scared: I'm also hoping to find some research stuff to get involved with. Other requirements: two kids, Army reserves, 16 hours a week at a grunt job. Occasional volunteering trying to get a non-profit off the ground.

Good luck!

I'm taking orgo 1/lab the first half and physics 2/lab and either bio2 or genetics the second half. Right now I'm right in the thick of spring sports season for high school(athletic trainer) so that three levels of baseball/softball/soccer and two levels of track(boys/girls)/lacrosse(boys/girls)/girls water polo, rugby, golf and tennis. Then come the second week of August are the evilly famed football 2-a-days. So I'll kiss the last three classes of physics for the live of 12 hour practice days

I'll be taking O-chem labs 1 and 2 (was going to take the lectures, but chickened out --I'm doing way too many ECs this summer). Also, statistics and Sociology (10-11 credits in total). Shouldn't be too hard, the lab prof is notoriously easy. Only worried about stats because I'm horrible at math.

I'll be interviewing at med schools.

I am taking Orgo 1 and 2 lab at a local state college---so I should get an A in both.
I am taking Experimental Design and Statistical Inference at my uni--easy A course
Then studying for mcat verbal while taking orgo 2 lab at the state college.
I also have a gyn membership at YouFit so I am planning to workout everyday, cardio for at least 60 mins and lift weights on upper body.

In on this. Come at me 4.0 summer!

As an applicant? Are you in Texas?

Organic sequence labs without the lectures first... How is that even possible?

At my school the course is one sequence and the lab another. I've heard of people doing the labs to get a grasp on the concepts hands on.

If you are referring to me, I have already taken the lectures at my uni the lab is 2 credit and does not have to be taken with the lecture...

The lab and lecture are separate courses here (2 credits for lab, 3 for the lecture). It's my understanding that you don't really need a strong lecture base to do good on the labs.

Taking bio stats (4 credits) and genetics (3). Also working in a lab this summer for the first time so I'm excited!

But I also need to get my clinical experience up, applying for scribe positions but everywhere is full.

But yeah 4.0 gotta do it.

Depends on the school and depends on the type of course. At my school the basic ochem labs were easy because all you had to do was follow instructions... I guess where knowing ochem comes in handy would be for the post lab analysis/paper.

All I'm doing is volunteering, shadowing, and swimming/conditioning during evenings.

Goal: 4.0

I know the prof I'll be taking it with is a pretty easy grader (the lab is supposed to be an easy A), plus I'll probably study the book quite often.

Just found out about a possible internship at a private clinic today, supposed to go speak to the owner next week. Debating if I should jump on the internship (and switch up my schedule completely) or wait and try and get involved with the lab at school. I've got shadowing in the box and a couple years to do either in the future.... aahhh! Decisions!

Taking Physics I & II (shooting for at least one A), Shadowing one last doctor, Volunteering at the hospital and local humanist group, and being the president of the SSA. Fun summer ahead.😀

Gonna be a super fun summer, can't wait to get started. I've got analytical chemistry + lab (really want to nail the lab since it's notoriously difficult) and some research on histones in a cool cell bio lab. There is also a biophysics research project I need to be finishing up. Finally, I hope to be working to provide some basic healthcare services (by working with a med student and an attending) to some local underseeved populations. And maybe even some MCAT prep on top?!?!

I'm jelly. I jumped up with excitement just reading about your summer.

My schedule for the summer is pretty limited. Mostly just classes (2, one for each summer session)
Calculus I
Calculus II
My friends think I'm crazy for taking 2 semesters worth of calculus in just one summer, but I don't really have anything else going on for me so I think it should be okay, right?

Dude I've got so much energy right now, finals only ended last week but I'm bored already. I officially get started with my new research on Monday, and I think I'm lucky cause my lab is letting me get into the nitty gritty even though I'm a freshman (yay for never washing glassware, lol). Anyway a lot of my friends are doing super cool stuff in S. America, Europe, Africa, Asia, ... dang now that I think about it pretty much everywhere haha. So yeah I am pretty jelly myself, nonetheless very excited. 😛

That's awesome!! Im taking genetics and women's studies, continuing malarial research, and volunteering (plus possible mcat prepping?)!!!

Are you a chem major?

You'll be fine...do the problems!
In fact it'll probably be beneficial since you won't forget calc🙂

I'm in gross anatomy for a month and a half. Let the games begin! Lol

Haha bio major, but analytical chem is pretty much required at my school. Malaria research sounds really cool, how do you get involved in somethin like that? Is it on the public health side or basic research?

And I just finished up genetics this semester, what a beast of a class. I was really hanging on a wing and a prayer on that one, haha. Good luck!! 🙂

I'll be taking biochem and intro to medical professions. I'm starting some research involving the histology of the Florida manatee (I'm a zoology major, hence the choice). Other than that, some basic shadowing and volunteering in the OR every week. Hopefully I can get a 4.0! :xf:

Edit: I'm going to start prepping for the MCAT as well.

Nice. What year are you?

A little confused about my summer plans as of now. I will definitely be shadowing, volunteering, beginning year 2 of a research grant, and working part time (every Friday night) in an ED.

Not sure what to do about classes, however. I was a silly little Freshman when I took Bio 1 and Chem 1, and I ended up making a B- in lecture/B+ in lab for chem. Thinking about retaking Chem 1 and taking Chem 2 for the first time, since it has been 4 years since I've had any chemistry at all. Also, I'm looking into a microbiology course, but it conflicts with Chem 1. Any advice?!?!

4.0 or bust, by the way!

Nice. What year are you?

I just finished my second year. I wish I could've started the research earlier but I'm just happy I have a position in a lab honestly. 😳

Oncology research!! Super stoked 🙂

4.0 hopefully. Just taking 3 gen eds so i don't have to mess around with them my junior year especially because I'm pursuing a double major. History, stats, economics, should be very easy. I guess stats counts toward you sGPA? So ill definitely study a lot for that, even more so because i got a couple Bs this year in some science courses so hopefully getting an A in a 4 hour class will offset a B in a 3 hour class. Anyways I'm doing research, volunteering, and working as well.

I'm going to be taking a couple of classes at my local CC before my semester at Cal.

Calculus 1 (5 Units)
Elementary Statistics (4 Units)

I already took BC, so I do not think Calc. will be very hard. I hope I can get these classes though, as CC have been receiving a lot of cutbacks in California...

Anyone started classes yet? Almost done with week two of my three week mini-mester course. Lots of work, but great class and I have an A average so far 😀

I've been anxiously waiting for classes to kick back in but my course load doesn't look too demanding in comparison to some of you all... yet I've heard that I may have a difficult Summer from people around the school. I'm basically taking Chem II w/ Lab and a 1 hr course. I'll also be volunteering at a local hospital.

It's funny how the levels of difficulty seem to differ between real life (at least at my school) and with members of SDN.

I agree completely. I've decided to add another class which means I'll be taking Chem I & lab, an online 3 credit humanities class and another on campus humanities course. But I'm cutting my work hours to once a week or not at all when I have Reserve Drill. And I don't plan on doing ANYTHING but studying and being a mom for a solid two months. Hopefully I don't die 😳

I can't speak for being a mom but I think that you'll be OK, Chemistry I isn't too difficult or time-consuming once you get a grasp of it. I think being a parent while working is going to be the toughest job but I don't have experience with that, like you do, so I'm sure you'll breeze through this Summer.

So.... Friday, the last day of my minimester class, I get an email telling me all of my financial aid- pell grant, loans, all of it- has been withdrawn because they finally evaluated my transcripts and have decided I haven't made sat progress towards a degree by their standards. I can appeal it, but either way I have to come up with $4,200 by next Friday. I may end up simply withdrawing from everything except Chem and the class I've already finished, obviously, and seeing if I can get family to help me cover the costs. *EPIC SAD FACE.*

I did get an A in that class though. Woot.

-Retaking Human Physiology (wasn't really a bad class, I just had way too much going on)
-Taking Introduction to Health Behavior and Promotion (Public Health class...easy A)
-Two jobs (one at my university hospital, another as a public health research interviewer)
-Academic credit for the lab that I "actually" participate in
-Volunteering as an on-call rape crisis advocate, and as a "regular" volunteer at my university hospital.

Summer is officially kicking. My. Ass. Currently have a 100 in my elective, high-B/low A in chem and fighting tooth and nail to keep it.

Updates? How are things going for everyone else?

This summer I'm doing cancer research. It's my first research experience and I'm beginning to love how they just leave me be, to do my own work and make my own contributions instead of just being their lacky. I'm learning so much!

Took trig during the mini-mester, taking pre-cal and stats summer I, and chem 2 for summer II.

I'd like to get some shadowing in but I'm not sure it's going to happen. :|

Relatively easy summer for me here, just taking one class and it's on-line Business Computing. Basically remedial stuff for me because I've been in IT for 17 1/2 years, I could probably teach the thing, but it's a required class for my degree track, so I'll blow through the stuff in a couple hours each week and take my A 😉

Let's just say that the first test for Chem II definitely humbled me. I'm going to have to perform well in the clutch to pull out an A.

Of course the professor has the grades curved for everything besides an A

Oh, I feel you. I've had to completely re-vamp my routine. And I will never again take a summer lab with any sort of additional demands unless I have a FULL time sitter again.

On a happy note- my financial aid appeal got approved, so I will be getting my tuition reimbursed here in a couple weeks! WOOO!

Physiology (tough, but I think I can pull off an A)
Public Health class (easy A)
Working at my university hospital as an SCA for ~30 hours/week
Working in a lab for ~15-20 hours per week
Getting ready to lead 4 extracurricular activities in the Fall
Pre-studying for Ochem

...and a third attempt at working out (the hardest thing of all)

 LOL! The struggle is real!!!
I really wanna get my goal body but I just can't put on muscle. I'm on my schools track team and coach kills me on the weight machines and.... nothing. Maybe I should try protein shakes. I've been kind of against GNC haha!

:laugh:A lot of us know that struggle.. the hardest part is those first couple of weeks, after that it becomes routine.

Definitely look into supplements, seriously. They help. Talk to someone who's actually working out regularly, not the dude at GNC who's working out but also getting graded on his sales numbers. M5 is great, add in some decent protein and you'll be off to a good start, don't worry about going crazy until you've been working hard for six+ months and find specific weaknesses you need to address.

Nice, I'm waiting and hoping to get mine financial aid appeal approved too.

:laugh:A lot of us know that struggle.. the hardest part is those first couple of weeks, after that it becomes routine.

I have a friend who likes to say that people quit in threes: after three workouts because they're sore, after three weeks because they're bored and not seeing immediate progress and after three months because they hit a plateau and get discouraged. If you can make it past those threes, you should be set.

re-took Organic 1 this summer, made a "B." I had an "A" at mid-term but I lost it -_- haha I started Organic 2 now, idk what to make out of the class so far but I am going to shoot for an "A." I am also taking DIscrete Systems and Differential Equations. I have an "A" in both of those so far. I intend of keeping them to really boost my GPA and show how I am trying to dominate this summer. I have to re-take the MCAT though. Anyone planning on taking it in July or August? If so, then what is your study plan/what has been your study plan? Thanks
