I don't need to have my stats up anymore. I got into the biomed sci MPH program Feb. 1st. Thanks for all the info everyone! Still haven't made my mind up yet...

I think you'll be fine with the GRE scores and GPA that you have. I got in to SUNY Albany's Biomedical Sciences program with a decent GPA and average GRE scores (lower than yours). I don't think you should waste your time by re-taking the GRE. Good luck.

It's too late for me to cancel taking the gre again. I'm taking it this Saturday even though the admissions people at Albany said my scores and gpa were good enough and to just have good lors and a good personal statement. Were you able to get any financial aid? I am wondering if I can get any from Albany. Are there any SPHs that I probably don't have a chance getting into? I am thinking of also applying to some health behavior MPH programs at different schools. I've heard they only look at soc/psyc gpa which for me is soc-3.7, psyc-4.0 for 9 classes. I know I'm not considering Harvard or Columbia or any place that I probably do not stand a chance of getting in to the MPH program. Are there any other SPH programs that are worth taking a look at? Where did you end up attending? Thanks for your help.🙂

Well I ended up defering my application to Boston U (MPH international health) for Fall 2008. I am currently working as a research assistant in Cleveland, OH. I think you have great GRE scores, I suggest you atleast try applying to two or even three of the top schools (Johns Hopkins, Columbia). I have a friend with a 3.3 whose GRE scores were lower than yours but she managed to get in to Johns Hopkins! There's nothing bad in trying. I am currently looking in to re-taking the GREs and applying to some more schools.

i got into the albany program and a program at upitt. i liked the albany one more so i went up there to visit and absolutely hated it. there is really nothing up there and the school is not that great anyway. i decided i was not going to go. i had less than a 3.0 and a decent GRE and decent reccs and activities. i ended up getting into hopkins over the summer so thats what im doing instead.it all worked out 🙂

The reason why I want to go to Albany is not for the social scene. I have many relatives who live in the area, so it would be easy for me to move in with my aunt in Rotterdam, NY from here in California. Finances are going to be #1 when it comes time for me to decide where to go. Living with my aunt beats having to pay rent. Plus, she goes on trips all the time. I'd have plenty of quiet study time that I don't have now. Albany still looks the best to me-and CA schools are a big NO. I'm done with CA; I can't afford to live here! I need affordable options!🙂

Hi again. Does anyone know if the schools of public health take the highest gre scores from different testings? Or do they average or take the most recent scores? Thanks a bunch.

I'm planning on moving to Albany next year to be near family and I am in the process of applying to mph programs. I'm honestly not sure where I fall in terms of what school I have a chance with for an mph... My undergrad. GPA is 3.9, but my GRE scores leave something to be desired (580 verbal, 680 quant). I have limited volunteer experiece in the realm of public health, but I am currently teaching 9th grade science through Teach for America. Ideally, I will be in Albany next year, but have not been able to find anything about UAlbany's reputation. Does it matter if you go to a big name school for public health? Albany is accredited, is that all really matters in terms of future opportunities? Both in terms of finance and quality of life Albany is my top choice, as well, but I don't want to sell myself short and risk harming my career before it even begins. Any advice on this, or even just input about UAlbany, would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know how much it matters where you go but I think it would be beneficial to go to a school with a good/well recognized public health program. Albany is typically a third tier school. I never even knew they had public health programs until I saw on SOPHAS.

Or perhaps Albany is a jewel in the rough. My impressions from interviewing were if you look at the school in the context of the training it provides in public health I think it compares quite favorably. Obviously the affiliation with NYSDOH is a unique aspect and a strength for the school. Admittedly the academic reputation of the overall academic institution at Albany is not probably comparable with some other SPHs and I can believe that a student without as impressive numbers but a strong public health background might be given a chance at Albany but not other schools. Of course different schools are better fits for different students and apparently you didn't feel Albany was a good fit for you. That's alright.

Hi again. Well, I did retake the gre. This time my v and q were not as high, but all I wanted to improve was my aw score. Before I got a 3.5 and this time I got a 5.5. Does anyone know if these schools only take the highest scores-Albany, USC-Columbia, Yale? Thanks for any info about this.

Can someone give me more information on SUNY Albany? Any opinions on their public health school? The area? etc. Much appreciated. =)

I realize this is basically the same as the question as in the last post - but I'd like to know if the same types of things. Is there anyone who attended Albany for an MPH? If so, what kind of experience did you have? Did you feel like you were well prepared for work or further graduate studies? If you have graduated from Albany, what kind of work are you currently involved in? Any information will be much appreciated - I am currently deciding between several schools, and I have not been able to find a lot of information about Albany's program and/or its graduates.

hi. I would like to ask if SUNY Albany had already made their admission decision for Ph D Biomed sci program? Anyone accepted?
