SUNY at Buffalo Class of 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was going to say that you could stay next to the North Campus and see if there is a campus bus that can take you over to the South Campus.

Are you planning to get a car.

AK

I will check the hotels in North campus.
I will not have a car and will just stay close to school.
What are the reasonable rates for the economic hotels in the area?
And How much for the rent around the school?

thank you for your information.

PS: I have been busy to complete all required forms, so I could not spend a lot of time on finding housing.

Well Susan Wiepert has been sending out housing list. I really don't know the cost to rent. I'm living at home.

Rates for hotels are probably $49-$89
It is a Saturday though which means more expensive.

Charge for cleanings? If you come twice a year, then it would be $58 at one visit, and $46 at the other visit. This fee includes the cleaning ($32) and an exam ($26 or $15, depending on if its the first or second visit). 26 + 32 = $58 for cleaning #1, 15 + 32 = $46 for cleaning #2.

There is a $41 one time fee to become a patient at the school. This fee include a panoramic x-ray and paperwork processing to make you a patient.

And you would probably have 4 x-rays taken at the first cleaning so that is $15.

Generally, the school fees are about 1/3 to 1/2 of what private dentists in the area charge. With dentistry, you have to choose two out of three - price, quality, or time. At school, the quality of work is really good and the price is right, but it takes a really long time to do stuff b/c the teachers have to check you at every step on the way. At a place like Aspen, the price is right and the time is not too long, but the quality of work may not be as good since those places are kinda like "dental factories".

Are you guys going to the med/dent mixer at Soho next Thursday (I think)? The student organinzing the orientation at the dental school said they have the entire second floor for this mixer. It should be fun, it'd be good to meet you guys.

Doctor Q - rent depends on where you are. If you are renting an apartment or townhouse in Amherst, you will probably pay between $400 - $600 per month (for one person). That would be rent and utilities. In Buffalo, it would be cheaper, around $300 to $500 per month for one person. Amherst is a nicer area to live and is closer to all the stores and shopping. The South Campus borders Amherst, so it's not far. If you look at apartments/houses in Buffalo, be sure to look in North Buffalo otherwise you'll be too far away. A good number of med/dent students live in North Buffalo, but a lot live in Amherst just b/c it is nicer and very safe. Don't pay more than $700 per month for one person in Western NY, that is too much. Myself, I live in Amherst in a town house and pay $400 per month (I have a roommate and we each pay $400).

Hi griffin04

Thank you very much for info.
It is very helpul.

Dear fellows,

I am planning to get a cell phone for myself at Buffalo. Do you think it's a good idea? if so, which company has a good reputation in it's good reception/service? The major wireless carriers I am considering are AT&T, Sprint PCS, Verizon, and T-Mobile (VoiceStream). I'll appreciate any responses from you guys, especially people who have used cell phones in Buffalo already.

Doc Cancerman - I have had Sprint service in Buffalo for the last 3 years. Most of my classmates, when they got to Buffalo, signed up for Sprint service. A good number have Verizon as well, but I would say there are more Sprint customers than Verizon customers. Also, people have Cingular in this area as well. Or maybe Cingular is now Verizon? I'm not sure about that. I have never met anyone in BUffalo who has AT&T and I don't even know what T-mobile is. So I would say your best bet would either be Sprint, Verizon, or Cingular. My Sprint service right now is fine and there is a Sprint store in the Target Plaza on Niagara Falls Blvd to take care of stuff. I think it is a good idea to have a cell phone just because I can't ever find a pay phone on South Campus when I need one and the pay phone is now 50 cents per call. Also, since we are a state school, we don't have those nice little campus phones to call on-campus numbers, so you have to find a regular phone if you want to call your professors.

Hey Cancerman:

If you decide to go with Sprint tell me because if a sprint customer refers you then they can get a service credit. I would be glad to split the credit with you.

not to refute doc adam's post, but i have had cellular in buffalo for years.....and cingular is the way to go. verizon is a close second, but you never pay roaming or long distance EVER with cingular, where the coverage area w/ verizon is spotty. sprint (for me) is an absolute no-go. my friends and i used to have PCS before and you get alot of dropped/lost calls. i ended up canceling it after a month, and they were so embarassed that they did not even charge me for terminating the contract. i have never lost a call with cingula in 2 years, and they have this new feature where you can check your minutes used online or by callin customer service. that way you never go over your plan minutes. i would say go cingular, or verizon if you;re going to be downtown alot, but please....for your own sake...steer clear of sprint in buffalo..

just my $.02, let me know if you have any questions

Thanks a lot you all for the replies regarding the cell phone questions. They are all great advices!

Geez I'm surprised that EW1779 had such bad service with sprint.

Most of my friends go rid of Cingular because of the high amounts of static.
On sprint, I have not lost one call.
