Lets get a thread going for our class....hope everyone got all those forms filled out...and is looking foward to school in NYC

See you all in August

I got pulled from the waitlist today. My housing situation in Harlem is running out at the end of the month, and I know that some people had posted earlier about available housing. Anyone out there still looking for roommates?

so is anyone actually dorming?

I decided to dorm the first year(it also helped that I have a single studio).

Looking for a place off campus is too much hassle when i'm in DC till the start of school. I'd rather just find a place for 2nd year in an apt bldg or maybe a house with some meds....(park slope or brooklyn heights, etc)

From what I understand from current meds: I'd say about 1/2 of the M1 class stays in the dorms....

A friend of mine also applied for housing on campus...

hope some of this helps....
Will

Congrats ColumbiaMPH!!!! Are you finally moving to Brooklyn?

Hey guys, see you in August...

I sent in the dorm info last week, but have yet to hear a reply.

I went this past weekend to scope out downstate, kings county and parts of brooklyn. Brooklyn heights is beautiful! I'm thinking of actually buying an apt for 2nd year onward, b/c prices will keep increasing so it'll be a good investment.

oh yea, and they're doing some renovating ofthe student center enterance, it looks really nice. and the alumni aud. is huge and looks relatively brand new.

too excited and anxious to get out to the city.

State University of New York Downstate Medial Center College of Medicine '07

what a long name, when non-med people ask you where you're going, do you guys say downstate? or brooklyn med? or what?

usually i refer it as downstate

i'm prob. going to find off campus housing (most likely looking for a roommate...suitemate) since I don't think the dorms are worth the money they are asking (especially for the single dorms)...prob can get an apt for a same amount or just a bit more. However, I can't put down a deposit for an apt. until I hear from Einstein...don't won't to wind up with an apt in brooklyn and going to school in bronx (hopefully...hehe). 🙂

I am dorming in an open double....hope everything will work out =\

is that what you requested for? an open double? kinda sucks to have to live with a roommate doesn't it

I am applying for the class of 2004.......but good luck to all those entering in 2003.

I already live in brooklyn (20mins away by bus and 10mins away by car), do you think it makes sense to dorm or move closer?

Yea, I requested an open double because my family lives in manhattan. I figure if the dorm situation is too bad, I can always go home for the weekend.

i'll probably look for a place in the brooklyn heights, park slope, prospect height area near the 2 train.

YES!~ I just got the call this morning from the wait-list.... yippeee for me. I am in Boston and have absolutely no clue what I am going to do now about anything except quit my job! See you all soon! Hey guys! Congrats to all who have been accepted to Downstate! I've posted on this site before, but I just wanted to let you all know that I'm still looking for a roommate for my 2-bedroom in Park Slope. I've PM'd some of you guys, so I'm hoping that you're checking your messages.

Anyways, I'm not living in the dorms for the first year cause I'm trying to establish NY state residency for 2nd, 3rd, 4th years since I'm from California (dorms don't count for residency status; one must either rent or buy for a full 12 months before applying for NY state residency).

Right now, I'm living in Baltimore, doing research at Johns Hopkins. But I was up in NYC about 3 weeks ago and I found a very nice, recently renovated (9 months ago) 2-bedroom in Park Slope. It has all hardwood floors, new windows, new kitchen, and ceiling fans in every room. The subway stop (m,r,w) is only 100 yards away at the Prospect Ave stop. There is lots of street parking available for those that have cars. The place is available July 15 for a 1-year lease. The landlord says he prefers medical students, and a credit/financial check will be done, so it's pretty safe for either roommate to trust the other's ability to pay the rent on time. I prefer male non-smoker, but that's only a PREFERENCE. No pets please. The rent is $800 per month. Utilities not included. I'm paying $900 for my share of the rent.

If you're not available for a July 15 move-in, then maybe we can work something out for Aug 1 or Aug 15.

Let me know if you're interested or have any questions! Thanks!

What's up Coco, it looks like Ill be living on campus at least for the first year, sorry bud.

QUESTION: Have you guys gotten your first two shots of the Hepatitis B vaccine yet? I haven't and jsut talked to student health - we cannot be registered until these two shots are administered by our physician and they will give the last shot.
this scks not to mention that each shot costs some ca$h.

Coco... I am in Boston, just got the call last week and am hoping to find someone like you to live with off campus! Your rent amount and location sounds awesome to me if you have not already found someone... I will be available to move in August first if this works for you but will probably not be in the area until just before orientation? Contact me!? [email protected] I will also try to send you a message in the meantime. PlEASE let me know your status!

BUMP... Anyone looking for a roommate for this year at Downstate? Is anyone else going to Downstate? I need to find a place to live and would love a two or even three bedroom place off campus ? I am in Boston right now, and pretty stressed about finding a place in Brooklyn. anyone? - Dave

hey Davo,
I'm actually looking for an apt in brooklyn (prob. around prospect park or near the ATlantic st. train stops b/c there are a lot a lines that go to that station which makes commuting to school and to manhattan much easier). I got an email from another downstate prospective student and she was looking for a 2-3 bedrooms...so if you want us three can look for a place together...i'm hoping to find something nice and cheap ($500-$600).

NYCgurl, that sounds ideal, I have PM'd you with more details so get back to me! -d🙂

to everyone out there, i'm looking for an apartment too. If I find anything I'll post. why don't we try to find a house with 4 to 5 bedrooms and rent the whole thing. It'll probably be cheaper. I can count 4 people already looking for roommates with NYCgurl post plus me.

NYCgurl, I'm in Queens NY, so if you want to plan something to look for apartments together, I'd be happy to join you.

Can we all pm or post an email address on here so we can get on the same email address chain and work on things instead of on this thread? I will start a chain of people as soon as I get all the emails of the four/5 of us? I know that BerkelyMD alerady has a 2 bedroom that he is showing tomorrow(only) in Park Slope.. but I cannot make it to the showing and neither can Katie, the girl from CA that I have emailed once with about finding a place? So I think a place 4-5 BR's would be sweet, cheap!... maybe you two NY people can get one before we can make it down there? I am willing to send a check to you guys or whoever, without really even seeing it, as long as you guys tell me that its a nice place... after all we will be all living there right? I have good credit etc..

here's my email, lets get in touch ASAP for a place August 1st?!!:

hey guys,
i'll be looking for an apartment too over the summer. seeing as though teh single studio at downstate costs 1100+ a month, i think i'll be able to find a better apartment at a cheaper price. i'm going to start looking seriously next week, b/c this week is my last week at work. so count me in on the "downstate off-campus apartment search" bandwagon.

That makes at least 4-5 ... I too have to work until next Friday (25th) so I will not be in the area until that weekend or the following week say, Monday the 28th for sure to sign a lease or earlier if I have to.. but I am willing to put trust in others if they look and find something before then? Where are people thinking ? TeinVII? whats your email>? want to pm it to me? -d

Also looking for housing.

Does everyone check SDN regularly? Why don't we just start a Downstate Housing thread?

ok here's mine

Does anyone have an account on Sublet.com. It costs about 40 bucks for three months and if someone has it already, let me know. That way, I won't have to spend it again and I'll be able to contact the landlords.

Since I am in NY, I will most likely be looking for places in Prospect Heights and Park Slope and one or two other neighbourhoods. Let the hunt begin!!

going to Downstate housing thread, but trying to get everyones email! craigslist.org is a very good site with lots of stuff in Park Slope and Heights... not sure about 5 BR places but it should be cheap cheaper? -d

Does anyone have info regarding the class schedule? The website has the schedule for last year, just wondering.

Regarding the Hep B

I just got my first one today at a DOH clinic, and was told, in person, face to face, by a member of the Student Health Services clinic, that this (along with all the other reqs, of course) would be adequate, that the rest of the series can be done post-reg.

If you are worried about the $$$, at least here in NYC you can get 'em done for free, as well as pretty much any other vacc. Call 212 - 676 - 2284 to get clinic adresses and hours. They are all walk-in, first-come first-served, so you may have to wait awhile, but if it saves a couple hundred bucks.....

i would also like to join in on this 'downstate off-campus apartment search'. my email address is [email protected]

Hi,
I'm not going to downstate, or maybe just not yet, but I thought I could help b/c I live in Brooklyn. Yes, craigslist is great. You can also try the village voice online at 1pm on tuesdays when they post their new ads. You may also want to check the Courier's website. The Park Slope Food Co-op is a great resource if someone is Brooklyn. There is a wall along the stairwell to the 2nd floor where people post housing options. I know a bunch of people who found housing that way. They have a website but I don't think there is too much on it. You should consider Ft. Green too b/c it's close to most trains also, as is Boerum Hill. Good luck starting school!

So there are approximately 185 people in 'our' class , yet only a few people have appeared? Just giving a bump here to see if there is anyone out there... ?

BigRedStress - Did you just graduate from cornell? Who are you? What was your major? Email me at [email protected]

I got in yesterday. I'm considering the offer

NICE!! We almost flamed the crap out of each other on another post this morning and we might be classmates... no hard feelings I trust!@ hehehe

Does anybody have any information on what classes we have to take and what times we are in class? Just wondering.

last year's class schedule is on webCT...onthe downstate website

Does anyone know where we pick up our keys on the 17th if we are dorming?

Yeah, I saw the schedule form last year's class. It looks pretty booked. I'm wondering how I am going to find time to study if I attend all lectures?

Where did you find the schedule? I tried to look on the website but couldn't come up with anything.
