SUNY Upstate thread

I withdrew my acceptance - good luck all!

Any news on the Upstate front. I'm agonizing over this entire waiting process. :scared: Any info is much appreciated.

I got a message on my voicemail from Upstate today asking me to call back to discuss admission for the fall. I didn't get the message in time to return the phone call, but I think it's good news. I'm on the high priority alternate list. I don't think I'm going to take the spot though - but it means the alternate list is moving!

I'm also on high-priority waiting for a word from them.

Anyone know how many people are on that list?

anybody know when orientation/classes start at Upstate? Thanks.

Jeff

Orientation starts Aug 18.

It seems as though SUNY (Upstate/Downstate/Buffalo) are raising tuition Again. (I received an aid letter this weekend). $2000 this year, $2000 last year.. Tuition is literally going to be 18,800 for in-state, 31,900 for out of state next year. I fear that I will go up again the following year and break 20k.

Sorry for the random comment, its just frustrating have costs driven up well over inflation. I wish someone would do something about this..

Anyway best of luck to all of you . HPA is a good sign .

I am on the low priority waitlist, but am hoping I am accepted at some point. SUNY Upstate is my first choice. I guess I'll just plan on VCU until then.

Herp

I just got accepted to Buffalo so I just withdrew my acceptance. Good luck!

anyone else hear anything lately?
withdrew lately?
🙂

I just withdrew 2 days ago - got in off of the HP Alternate list.

I am most likely going to upstate...wheres everyone living? i still have no idea

What's going on with the Upstate thread. I see many visitors but no new info. Lets stick together and support each other!!!

I spoke with the admissions director, Jennifer Welch, the other day and she said the waitlist (high-priority one that is) is moving, but it's moving slowly. She said to try and be patient and see what happens within the next month. For those of you that are only on waitlists, when do you plan on re-applying, if at all?

I'm just really hoping that the high priority list works out. I'm banking on it.

bump...any news lately? I just spoke with someone in admissions, they said the bulk of the movement of the HP waitlist is between May 15th and June 15th. I'm getting worried that I haven't heard yet....June 15th is in a week from today!!!

it seems that the waitlist is moving so slow because of people holding acceptances who are on waitlists at other places. So it's trickledown effect......they get into their first (or second) choice and release their acceptance at Upstate, which then gets offered to one of us on the waitlist. And my understanding is that this will continue all summer long :scared:

You are correct get prepared for the ride

Hey guys. I applied to Upstate for their Early Assurance program (but didn't get accepted.) It's my first choice and I will be applying this fall. I know a lot about the school since I work in the psychiatric department and volunteer in the ER.

I hear many of you talk about the High priority and low priority waitlists... are these the only waitlists? Are your options for upstate basically: Accepted, rejected, high-priority waitlist, low-priority waitlist?

And, for those of you who do not get off the waiting list, what do you plan to do next year? Did any of you have an interview with a psychiatrist? And, if you don't mind, could you also post your stats?

Thanks!

There are four categories: accepted, high priority waitlist, wait list, and rejected.

If I do not get off the HPWL I plan on reapplying for next year and submitting my amcas in July.

But if you do not get off the HPWL and apply for the class of 2009, what will you do during next year? Job, etc?

I work for the National Cancer Institute at Sloan Kettering in NYC so yes, I will be working how about you?

🙂 got the call from the admissions office today. The high priority waiting list is moving !! good luck to all.

Congratulations Susie! Did Jennifer make the call herself? What exactly did they say when they called you?

To answer your question, TJ. I'm a senior at the University of Rochester. My plans other than med. school are law school (for malpractice law), PhD in clinical psychology, the seminary, and teaching kindergarten. I plan to do all five of these, just not sure what order yet 😉

And no, I don't plan on marrying or having a family.

Your quite funny Dr Trek 1. I plan on taking it as easy and updating my new application. I am done being a Jackie of all trades. I was once just like you. I guess I am in good company.

TJ, I am quite serious-- I didn't include how I want to be an FBI agent because I thought that you'd certainly think I was teasing. I also didn't mention my stage and theater experience.

Doing all those things just feels right to me. Having an MD could help me do even better at all those things and make even more of a difference. I look forward to it.

What do you do at the cancer center, TJ?

I am a health educator on the 1-800 4 CANCER information line. I answer questions on symptoms, treatments, side effects, clinical trial searches and just stuff. I truely believe in being a well rounded person and that medicine should not be the only thing in your life.

I do think that you should take a break and reproduce, its a shame to let good genes go to waste. When we have idiots running around. 🙄

Hehe great line, thanks 😀 However, I also don't think I'd have the time to care for offspring properly. And fortunately, potent men typically remain potent for the rest of their life, so I have plenty of time if I ever change my mind

I got the call from Carolyn actually... she just said that they reached my name on the list (don't know where that is, forgot to ask) and she asked if I was still interested... then it was just admin stuff, paperwork.

Is Carolyn Jennifer's main secretary? Or is it Jim's main secretary?

Did she at least say "congratulations"? 🙂

Not sure if she is Jennifer's secretary... She was congratulatory and sounded really nice and upbeat when she offered the spot.. I guess it's nice to give good news ... not a bad job. 🙂

Hehe good point. That indeed would be a fun job. However, I would have fun with it and pretend like we had to reject them and then finally inform them of their acceptance at the end of the call 😉 But, some may feel that'd be too mean

Anyways, congratulations again and I look forward to being a MS1 when you are a MS2! 😀

I emailed Jennifer Welch the other day asking what my chances of acceptance off the HP waitlist were. She responded that the waitlist is moving much slower than expected this year and if she had to guess, my chances don't look good. If you are really anxious about where you stand...I would email her. At least she was honest. This obviously could just be specific to me... I'm totally bummed. Good luck to everyone.

Did she give you pointers on what you could do to improve your application (re-submit)? Did she tell you to prepare as if you would not get in, like take the MCAT again or did she say that the list is moving slowly???? :luck:

To who ever posted the question on where people are living, I've got a buddy that should be going to Upstate in the fall. He's from LA and in the middle of filming a movie right now, but as long as finishes his his shots, he will be attending school at Upstate. He told me he is going to live in the med student dorms. If you guys have any questions regarding waitlist movement or living arrangements, he would be happy to answer your questions. Just PM him at premed1218. Good luck everyone. 👍

She basically said that she's not 100% sure but that the list is moving slower than expected and if she were to guess, she'd probably say things are not looking great and encouraged me to reapply for next year. She just said that if I would like help with that process to let her know. That's all I got. The tone of the email was supportive, yet apologetic. All I know is that I've pretty much scratched upstate as an option for me. It very well me be different for you so good luck to you tjackson... and to the rest of you!

Was she giving you a general response, or a specific response based on where you personally stand on the list? It's still early June, its hard to count them out so soon.

I emailed her asking what MY chances of acceptance were and she sent me a personal email back. Although she didn't say specificaly...I'm guessing/assuming I am below many people on the HP waitlist and since the list is moving slower this year that my chances don't look good. I hope you all get better news. I'm counting myself out!

We here on this thread are praying and hoping you get in !!!!!!!! :luck: :luck: :luck:

Keep the faith

Thanks tjackson! But I'm not too hopeful at this point since I basically got a big fat NO from the horses mouth! But thanks for your support 😳

She didn't exactly say no, it is just moving slowly at the moment. I am freaking out just as much, but hanging on to a small hope. 🙂

SUNY Upstate is totally number whoring this year like they did last year, hence the slower movement.

But, i bet since they are totally non-preference to in state, there will be good movement, since tuition is not a factor if someone accepted to upstate gets pulled into a better school. You just have to wait a little longer.

What do you mean?? Please explain. 😳

number whoring = accepting people with high numbers to boost rep/ranking

this has been part of Upstate's initiative starting in 2000. Thus, the people holding acceptances right now, probably have better numbers than those in the past.

Compared to last year, you will see less movement this year based on the theory that more of the higher numbered applicants will keep their acceptance rather than jump ship if they:

1) feel they are not alone
2) feel like they are getting a good deal money wise
3) think they can somehow stand the syracuse winter
