So let me get this straight it is rumored he is a 2nd year medical student. My question is if he truly is a medical student, why would he throw his whole future away like this? Accounts have all said he was just an overall normal kid with an outgoing personality. Does one get radicalized that easily? I'm curious as to if it was his brother who pulled all the strings and dragged him into this mess.

He's a sophomore in college at UMass Dartmouth. He's probably a biology major or something and they just said medical student in the rush to get information out.

Nope. He's 19. Nice try tho.

Why the hell am I reading 'medical school student' in all these articles! I believe they are using medical school student and premedical student interchangeably. I thought this kid was older than 19, fail on my part hahaha.

EDIT: can someone please fix the title for me

Isn't the question the same whether he was a medical student or not?

Either way, he's pretty ****ed, his future career that is

He's in college studying marine science.

The medical school student story appears to have come from an interview with his father in Russia. His father didn't really seem to have a clue what his boys were doing. 🙁

1. For some people, obtaining a goal is more important than individuality. Sadly, in this case following a radical ideology was more important than this man's future.

2. The power of persuasion from someone you look up can be extraordinary.

👍👍 This is pretty much the reason, although understanding the psychology of a deranged individual can be time-consuming. We need to fund more mental asylums.

I currently work at one (inpatient mental health facility) and plan on attending med school and becoming a psychiatrist so I certainly agree.

Primary prevention should be utilized instead of tertiary prevention. We need to encourage people to seek mental health help, but that will never happen with the terrible stigma that currently exists on those who have mental health issues.

Sounds like this 2nd guy has DPD if his brother was actually able to convince him to try and kill people at the Boston marathon. Definitely could have used some mental health treatment.

His parents thought he was a medical student probably because they don't know that the medical education system here and in Canada is different from the rest of the world (where one enters directly into medical school right after high school) and that being a pre-med does guarantee one will continue on to medical school.

It bothers you that he has bombed a marathon and "thrown his future away" because he is (would be) a medical student? Holy Jesus, you need to take a break from SDN.

Could it be the 26 year old, older one?

2 quick asides:

Anyone think they should discuss extremism in high school health class? I'm serious because some sort of extremism targets all sorts of people. Maybe a lecture on extremism such as terrorist groups, hate groups, and gangs or something.

When I read the title I thought, "not again," because that craigslist killer was a medical student in 2009, I think. And the Yale guy who killed a woman in the lab in 2009 wasn't a medical student, but sort of in the medical field. And the not so recent, yet totally creep serial killer H.H. Holmes in pharmaceuticals. And one of the guys Hannibal was based on was a medical student. Why are so many bad guys in medicine?

Edit: They went to high school in Massachusetts.

Your title states as fact something that you yourself should be able to figure out isn't true. This isn't really an appropriate forum to discuss this anyway.

because it's the media.....the same media that claimed the suspects were both in custody like 2 days ago, the same media that claimed the dude trying to save an injured woman was actually his girlfriend he planned on proposing to later that day....the same media that claimed the father of the child who died was actually running the race, and that the kid died at the finish line waiting to hug his father as he finished his race....the same media that leaked covert and strategic information pretty much all week

The lesson: Don't believe a thing the media tells you. Wait till someone credible steps up and gives real information. They are often wrong or just plain fabricating stories.

demonizing the mentally ill will not solve the problem of terrorism.

His future career? I think he has bigger problems to worry about right now, like the death penalty or his indefinite stay at Guantanamo Bay.

Glad to see someone understanding the deep problem of today's corrupt media.

A person who may idealize a person in a specific role (such the brother for example) is not the DSM textbook definition of one with DPD (Dependent Personality Disorder). Most typically, DPD is found in sexual/ romantic relationships (the foundations they are built on typically foster and fuel the sense of dependence on someone's affection, acceptance, virtue, etc.) Nothing that has been mentioned (at least publicly) has indicated anything, so, it is very hard say what type of disorder he could have. However, just based purely on the theory that his brother persuaded him to think a certain way about certain issues in life would signify nothing near DPD.

He ran his brother over, engaged in a firefight with police/fbi with automatic weapons and explosives, and made insincere tweets encouraging Bostonians to "stay safe" after the bombings. That and he killed a cop, placed an explosively knowingly next to a child, and calmly left the scene amid panic and chaos. He targeted THE international sporting event all while maintaining the guise of a like-able, popular and level-headed person.

I don't think this is a mental health issue. This is nowhere close to the same as, say, the sandy hook killer.

The older brother convincing him to do it rumors are wild speculation at best. For all we know they are both members of a cell that has long been planning attacks.

"My question is if he truly is absolutely anybody doing anything, why would he throw his whole future away like this?"

FYP.

BIG RED FLAG, I AM A CONVICTED TERRORIST? Is my list to top heavy??

I'm sure if someone wasn't banned the answer would be: "Screw ethics, play the game!!!"

+100000000. After the Sandy Hook incident and the media publishing and blasting the wrong name of the culprit for several hours, even linking to the wrong FB profile, I've steered away from the "breaking news" minute-by-minute updates. Much of it is speculation and interviews with people who are remotely related to the incident and really have nothing to contribute. It's like they toss aside any kind of fact checking in favor of sensationalism. Ugh. End rant.

At least the kid was outgoing and personable this time insead of

"he was a loner, very bright, with no girlfriend or friends"

Having the averge joe think that only quiet, bright, socially awkward kids can be maniacs.

I sort of wish it was a "loner" because that would suggest that fewer people are involved and that the problem's now solved. Like a unibomber.

With an "outgoing" person, I suspect it could go either way... there might be a larger group and he was simply the "gunman." I hope there's not. I'm just saying, poor Boston might have a sleeper terrorist cell. Strangely, one of the marathon bombers got his citizenship on September 11 2012: http://boston.cbslocal.com/2013/04/19/marathon-bombing-suspect-became-u-s-citizen-on-september-11/

He's not convicted...what happened to innocence until guilt proven?

Because believing in something bigger than yourself is inconsequential to life, right? I don't condone this young man's actions at all, but the belief that an individual can contribute to the greater image of mankind is what gives many people meaning in their lives (i.e. their goal).

This and not to mention the fact that they had tons more bombs ready for potential future attacks. Many of which were recovered and detonated thank goodness.

That goes out the window when you have over span of 5 days some pretty concrete evidence of terrorism and murders, not to mention his gunfight with officers last night and the fact that they could all ID him and he fled.

Concrete evidence= a blurry video...right.....and where's the forensic evidence linking his gun to the officer's death? Until he gets his day in court, he's a suspect.

which gun? And how about the eye-witness account of the man who saw him drop the bag that eventually exploded? Or the injuries he sustained in his initial gunfight with the feds? This aint CSI dawg

Im assuming he had a gun if it was a gunfight, so was it his bullet that killed the officer? That's how this whole pursuit started, with the death of the MIT officer. Im not denying he was caught in the crossfire, and got injured as a result.

This whole incident ties into the boston bombing, which was what I was getting at earlier. If he was involved, and did this, wouldn't he have fled the city for his dear life? As a comparison, Dorner was continually on the run after he started his killing spree. Dzokhar kept tweeting days after the event as if nothing happened, and didn't bother to even shut down his account. And has this eye witness been cross examined?

Lol. Yeah... he got caught in the crossfire as a bystander and instead of seeking medical attention decided to go hide in a boat for 18 hours.

He will get his day in court and the 50 billion witnesses (carjacked guy, boston marathon witnesses, police officers who engaged in a shootout with him, guy who saw him in the boat, etc.) will all testify against him. That's not even counting forensic evidence to come. Conviction is almost a near certainty. The only real uncertainty is death penalty or life in prison.

Right now, given the evidence against him I'd say he's got less a chance of acquittal than Jerry Sandusky of winning his appeals.

Also, doesn't matter if he or his brother actually killed the officer. He is culpable regardless.

Ding ding ding. This is likely the correct answer.

Who cares honestly? He blew people up with a ****ty bomb recipe, he is going to jail, /end story.

Anyone think they should discuss extremism in high school health class? In Russia too?

....just so we're clear, don't connect the actions of two lunatics with connections to Chechnya to all of Russia.

He had a cache of illegal weapons...how are they going to tie those to him? And how many unarmored civilians who got "caught in the crossfire" have you heard of who not only survived barrages of automatic high caliber gunfire and IED explosions, but decided to hide in a boat instead of seeking medical care?

Not that this argument is either appropriate or relevant right now since pretty much every store, bar, office and hotel on Boyslton St. near Copley has video surveillance of the street.

Definitely not. In general, I don't connect terrorism with Russia at all. In fact, I'm going to edit my above response because they went to high school in Massachusetts, USA.
