This past weekend I was listening to Dr. Dean Edell's national radio show. Dr. Edell has been a media doc for a long time and he hosts a syndicated call-in radio show. He does commentary on the medical profession and he answers medical questions from callers.

Dr. Edell commented extensively about a survey of members of the medical profession that found that surgeons were significantly taller than those who practice in other specialties. Surgeons, as a group, were rated as much more attractive physically than other types of physicians.

I am not making this up. I busted out laughing while listening to Dr. Edell talk about this survey. Dr. Edell thought it was pretty funny too. So why are surgeons taller and more handsome than those who pratice in other areas of medicine?

interesting... I completely wrote off surgery because I'm 6'5 and would think that'd give me back problems... I'll try to throw off the averages in another specialty

Confidence = Attractive
Surgeons = Very Confident
Surgeons = Attractive

:luck:

Agree. Tall is not a benefit when bending over an operating table. They (the tables) adjust, but not that much. You see far more compact types as surgeons. But they certainly are more confident, so by the above analysis would be more attractive.

same case for any prestigious job😎

CEOs also are on average several inches taller than the norm (I believe its 6' something)

nothing suprising here

This is probably based on the article written by a bunch of doctors in Spain. It was published in the British Medical Journal, as a joke. (The BMJ's Xmas issue is always kind of satirical.) The study's authors said that internists were shorter because they wear heavy stethoscopes that make them hunch over. They also speculated that surgical masks may have an "anti-aging" effect and make them more handsome.

The article's really funny. I've attached it, if you get a chance to read it.

Well, surgery is still a field that is disproportionately male, and since males are ~5 inches taller than females on average, it kinda makes sense that surgeons would be taller on average as well.

I doubt the premise that they are, in fact, taller is true. Besides, there are several specialties which are disproportionately male.

Haha thanks for posting that. Anyone who takes that article seriously clearly didn't read it.

I love their fourth reference:
4 Wikipedia. Snow White. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_White.

This is like comparing KIA with HYUNDAI. Doctors are not typically the best looking bunch, you have to go to social sciences and arts for that.

much more attractive by members of the medical profession. In a survey, why would physicians rate surgeons as more handsome than doctors who practice other specialties? Why would the beautiful people gravitate toward surgery? And why would the beautiful people be more likely to be accepted into these residencies. Apparently, this is the case, at least in the subjective judgment of the medical profession in this particular survey.

I am thinking of going into surgery.
Now, to my understanding does that mean that I will grow by 5 inches and become drop dead steamy or does that mean that I already am extremely handsome and don't it yet?

On a serious note I work with surgeons that are 5'5" and ugly as hell as well as surgeons that are huge and wear a size 9 glove. Just like everywhere else there are ugly and handsome people. It might be that people associate attractive with confidence and charismatic personality. I find it to be the case with JFK. I always hear people say that he was extremely handsome and charismatic but when I look at him (in a heterosexual type of way) I find him to be repulsive as far looks go. He is fugly.

God lives in heaven on high.
Heaven is above us.
Surgeons are closer to God than other specialties.
Ergo, surgeons are taller.

Seems simple enough to me . . .

Simple. A lot of the more jock-ish types go into surgery (similar to orthopedics), as it takes a very gung ho, alpha male (or female), "give me the ball" attitude to be a surgeon. You have to want to literally crack open someone's chest and grab his heart. The mantra is "a chance to cut is a chance to cure".
Plus there is a pretty significant old boy network mentality in some surgical departments, and residency directors most frequently enlist folks who remind them of themselves -- like generates like. I've actually witnessed a group of surgeons bragging as to who had run the most marathons. A lot of medicine is personality driven, and folks in med school look for role models they can relate to. The more nerdy looking med students thus tend not to gravitate toward this club. That's my take.

Still.....nothing beats the article about earwax removal in one of the Canadian journals.

The day was very hot, and no one was particularly in the mood to boat to Honey Harbour and then drive 45 minutes to Midland, just on account of ear wax.

No relation to the size of the wallet, right?:laugh:

well now... i'm a towering 5'5" and hope to be a surgeon one day...

I'm a 5'2", 105 lb. female. It is my dream and my goal to become a surgeon. I don't feel small, though; I've had a lot of experience with leadership and yelling at people much taller than me 😉 So honestly, I feel that my confidence will make up for my small size. I hope that this will turn out to be true and not too idealistic =/

Well, though I'm not an M1 until august, I'm going to say that if my surgical interest holds true 'till residency, then at least the handsome quotient will be filled! 😎

Being tall doesn't necessarily make one good-looking, and being short doesn't neccessarily make one ugly.

Women have a tendency to be attracted to taller men...but height - if anything is a necessary but insufficient - criterion.

There are tons of tall, ugly people. There are plenty of hot, short people. I could list 100 hot women celebrities, but don't have that kind of time...just think about Eva Longoria, Kelly Ripa, or Sarah Michelle Gellar.

As for guys, some of the best looking men in the world are under 6' tall. Think David Beckham, Tom Cruise, Michael Owen, Brad Pitt.

Point being...a nice proportioned body and a beautiful face can go further than height.

could depend on the tables too....the majority of the surgeons at our hospital are over 6 foot with the tallest being 6'6" and they raised the table up a pretty good height...Some of what I saw was sitdown surgery though so that changes stuff up.....go hand surgery!

If you google, both Brad Pitt and David Beckham list their heights at over 5'11", so that's not exactly all that far off the 6' mark. I wouldn't call them short.🙄

Lol, well, whatever, some of the best looking guys I know are between 5'8" - 5'11". As for women, there have been tons of hotties that are 5'2"-5'5". Height just doesn't really do it for me. Being 6'4" doesn't give someone a good-looking face. But this discussion is kind of getting stale...

One more thing...5'11" isn't short, but neither is it considered to be tall. I would consider Brad Pitt and David Beckham to be a bit above average height (5'9"). They aren't known for their height! Those two men are widely considered to be the best looking men in the world, and they aren't above
6'...just thought it was worth considering.

😍 David Beckham = Yummy

being 6'4 might not give you a better looking face but an average looking guy at 6'4 is better looking overall than 95% of guys at 5'9. Chicks dig the height 👍 😉

and how tall might you be? just for the record...

Well, that's cool that you think your height is that important. Keep telling yourself that height makes up the majority of good looks. Unfortunately, height has little to nothing to do with a good-looking face. Facial symmetry, specific proportions of distances between features (eyes, forehead to nose, etc), facial shape, skeletal-facial structure, skin quality, eyes, shapes of features, proportions of features, et cetera actually comprise what makes someone beautiful.

As for a body. I have seen tons of tall guys with bad bodies. They either have big stomachs, they lack definition, or they're just too bulky. Good proportions are again very important. I guarantee you that a chick is going to choose a guy that's 5'10" with a hot face and a hot body, over one that is 6'4" with a decent face and body. Height is a threshold thing. Most women want men to be at least height X...after that it becomes very secondary. And most women allow that height X to drop a few inches if it is compensated for in different categories...like amazing eyes and a gorgeous face.

Surgeons are probably more "TYpe A"s

Not that many people in med school with hot faces and hot bodies so the choice the chick will have if she wants a doctor is frequently a 6'4" ogre or a 5'10" gnome. Shrek usually wins that race. But FWIW, I still don't think 5'10" or 5'11" is what you call short -- 5'6" is short.

sure i'll give you that:

5'10 + hot body + hot face + fat bankaccount + funny might be better than average 6'4

but look how much he had to compensate

and keep telling yourself that women look for pretty faces in men...

I'd say 5'8 is short nowadays
