Hi everyone. Thanks for your interest in this thread.

I know this may seem like a strange question, but somewhat hypothetically, would a highly motivated student stand a fair chance of success in a general surgery sub-internship if he/she had not yet had the opportunity to complete the third-year general surgery core rotation?

I dont think you can schedule a subI without having completed the rotation. And from what I've seen of the subIs, it's all the misery of surgery internship without the reward of the OR

You will be compared to the typical sub-I who has completed the Core and done well.

Without having completed the basic core surgical rotation you will be unfavorably compared because there are lots of little things you learn during that rotation that you can't possibly know, even if highly motivated. Believe me, I can tell the difference between a 3rd year and a 4th year student.

I would say that it would be a mistake to do the Sub I first.

Strongly strongly agree

Thank you. I greatly appreciate your advice.
