I'm not sure what the argument is here. If a physician can provide more advanced care than a medic, it is an advantage to the patient for him/her to be in the field

Yeah we do.

This may be done occasionally, but it certainly isn't common/SOP.

Even in war the docs stay back in the aid station/make-shift hospitals. They have no reason to be on the front lines where they could become a casualty themselves, the only thing I think they could do better then combat medics/EMTs is clamping an artery. Say a femoral artery because he will have a way better understanding of it's location compared to an average medic. In war the medics stay back with the 4s/1s and only do anything when the threat is eliminated.
