Currently I am double majoring in Medical Microbiology and Immunology (that's one) and Zoology with honors in the liberal arts. I recently realized that if I drop MMI and only major in zoology, there is a chance that I could study abroad my final semester of undergrad.

So I have two questions:

1. I know there is a big debate over do majors hurt or help, but would this really affect my chances at being accepted?

2. For everyone that has studied abroad, would you recommend doing it your last semester? My only other option would be the summer before (hopefully) medical school starts, but those programs are typically shorter.

Thanks

Double majors honestly don't help much. What med schools care about at the end of the day is your GPA. Can't answer #2 for you, I haven't studied abroad.

If you're applying for this upcoming cycle, you being abroad for your second semester will very likely interfere with medical school interviews. That being said, studying abroad is one of the most amazing experiences ever. Squeeze it in somewhere if you can. Double major on the other hand, eh, couldn't care less.

I totally agree. Get really good grades and do interesting things with your life. No one cares about your majors as long as you're strong on sciences. I'd suggest making sure that your BS can get you an acceptable backup job without having to go to grad school.

If you follow a traditional career path, you will likely not have the opportunity to uproot and go abroad again. My stay in Germany was one of my best experiences in school. If I could go back, I'd have spent a year there, even delaying graduation to do so.

But if I apply right away, and my application is strong, isn't there a good chance that I will be able to interview before I leave?

I don't know how far you're into MMI, but I'm also an MMI major at Madison. Fwiw, I love my classes infinitely more than my friends who are bio/zoo majors. Just something for you to think about...there are some awesome classes in MMI.

Yeah, I'm at UW. I know its a sweet major, but I wouldn't be able to complete it if I went abroad, but if I'm going to spend 4+years of my life studying medical sciences after this anyway, then I'm thinking the experience might be worth more. However, if I don't get into medical school I know that my options are much better for getting a job if I have a degree in MMI rather than in Zoology.

If you want to study abroad then do it, even of you have to drop a major. One of my only regrets from college is not studying abroad.
