I had a question I hoped my fellow SDN'ers could answer. I am currently accepted at an osteopathic medical school which will begin on July 5. I am waitlisted at 4 allopathic medical schools and as of now, it seems that if I were to get in off the waitlist (due to my position on each) it wouldn't be until after I began classes at the osteopathic school. This is not intended as a DO vs MD thread as I do really like the DO school but getting an MD acceptance would present me with a difficult decision. If I were to decide to attend the MD school would I encounter any roadblocks at either school, ie. would the DO school make it difficult to disenroll and the MD school make it difficult to matriculate since I had already started classes at another med school? Also, any recommendations for what I should do re: living arrangments? I'm tempted to just commute from where I live now (45 min away) for the first month and then find a permanent place once I know I won't be getting in off of any of the waitlists. As always, thanks for any help and suggestions the SDN community can offer.

It would be a little sucky to start at a DO school and then leave if you get accepted somewhere else (mainly because they probably wouldn't be able to fill your spot). But I'd probably do it if I were in your shoes too.

If the school starts that early, it would seem to me that this wouldn't be a terribly uncommon scenario. While it would seem kinda shady to start at the DO chool then drop out if you got accepted to an MD school off the waitlist, if you really would prefer the MD school you could probably do it.

If you do switch, the DO school probably wouldn't refund your money for the semester, or even the entire year. But if MD is what you want, then maybe it's worth the price.

would anyone recommend writing a letter to the places I've been waitlisted and inform them that I would be beginning medical school on July 5 and if they could inform me of the likelihood of having a spot for me in their class by the end of June it would be much appreciated? I've already sent a LOI to one of the school's where I've been waitlisted so I could add that I would definitely attend if given a spot in the class (reiterate the point). What do you guys think? Does this come across as too stand-offish? I was planning to make the letter as non-confrontational as possible. Thanks for your input. 😳
