Hello. Long time lurker here. Registerd today because I need your help. Before going into details, I just want to say that I am NOT switchin to predental just because I want to have backup plans. So I hope this wont cause any flame wars. I got into several medical schools this year, but I changed my mind after some experiences with several dentists for my wisdom tooth problems. After that, I have shadowed several dentists for a few months, and I am now confident to say that I am ready to withdraw my acceptances from med schools and go for dentistry.

I am studying for DAT at the moment, and I feel it shouldnt be a problem for me since I still remember many things from MCAT (NOT SAYING DAT IS EASIER).

I already have 200+ hrs of shadowing dentists. But the problem is, all of my LORs are pre-med.. What should I do? Is getting letters from the dentists I shadowed + the committee enough for most dental schools?

Also, should I mention about applying to med schools on my application?

I would really appreciate it if you guys could help me with the transition..

Thank you so much in advance.

Dental schools will accept your LOR from a general dentist and the committee letter. HOWEVER, since your committee letter is for med schools, you need to go back to the committee and your professors (if they wrote you letters for the committee) and tell them about the career change. The letter is useless since it was geared towards med.

The application will ask you if you applied to any other health professions, what programs you have been accepted to, and if you have matriculated/enrolled in such a program.

Agreed with above. I see no reason to bring up the fact that you were previously pre-med, and that would include getting your LORs rewritten if they are specific to premed.

Many people switch, and if it comes up in an interview i wouldn't lie about it...but if all they know about u is that ur LORs are pre med it sends a red flag

This. And to add why. It is because they would think you did not put as much thought into it as you did for medicine, ergo, dental as backup.

As a previous pre-med I can say that there's no need to explain it but if you think it would help your case, which it definitely helped with my application, go ahead and mention it but don't revolve your entire PS around it.
