A "friend" of mine is a surgery resident PGY2 looking for any open first year path spots ( ie could quit surgery and go into path this academic year). Does anyone know if any of these exist.

You'd (or should I say, your friend) would be more successful applying for the start of next academic year. That way you can apply, interview, see different programs, etc, instead of trying to find one that by chance has an opening (which may not even be a good program). Every now and then a program has an opening mid year, but there isn't an advertised area for these. I guess some people just call path programs and ask.
