Hey all,

Dilemma here. I'm currently doubling in a social science major (International Development) and Biology. I would say the first is my main major, and Bio was tacked on because I had finished the pre-med requirements. I'm entering my senior year but having some difficulties. International Development requires a 100+ thesis for all its students, and it's adding a huge burden on my plate. I have been doing the fieldwork for it, but to be honest, my project does not excite me. The department is going through transition and the advising is horrible. I did this major, because I'm interested in Global Health and am really attached to my experience with it.

My option now is to drop it and stick with just Human Bio (which still emphasizes Global Health and 75% of the classes overlap in both departments). I'm studying for my MCAT in January and really doubt my abilities to finish the two majors and the MCAT. If I do Human Bio, I'd work in my lab on an honors project and could possibly get a publication by the end of the year.

So, at the end of the day, if I stick with the other major as well, yes, I'd be getting it on the diploma, but I don't know if I will be able to apply this year. My stats are good, I go to an Ivy (3.9 overall, 3.8 science). Really, the thing in the door is the MCAT.

I don't want to come off as calculative, but I know that my other major does set me apart from other Human Bio majors and that is one of the reasons that I may want to stick it out. However, I have a wide range of ECs that show my interest in global health/development. How much would the major matter? Does it matter enough that I should stick it out or can I still graduate with my sanity? Please let me know what I should do!

hmmm thanks, does anyone else have opinions?

If you didn't end up going to med school, which would you be happier with? Would either give you a boost going into the workplace, or would you need an advanced degree either way? Can you minor in International Development?

In the eyes of adcoms, your major isn't going to make much of a difference.

Your major doesn't matter. Do what you gotta do to (i) stay sane and have a good time, (ii) maintain your good GPA, and (iii) dominate the MCAT.
