I am currently a PGY-1 and happy at my program. My significant other of 8 years is planning on moving to another city, and would like me to transfer to that city since he has been unable to find a job where I am and we have been doing long distance for 5 years. There is another position opening listed for PGY-2 at a program I was interested in medical school in the city he is moving to. However, I am afraid of the repercussions about inquiring of this position. If I ask my PD will it jeopardize my position at the current institution, will they consider not renewing my contract if they know I could potentially leave. Does the new program care that I am moving there because my significant other will be there as far as weighing their decision. Advice would be appreciated!

You have to do what you think is right. I can't imagine it would jeopardize your current position. As long as you have performed well this year they are going to renew your contract but I would definitely start looking into it now to give your program some time to fill your vacancy. Program directors are well aware that life cannot be put on hold just because you are a resident. People get married, have kids, and move; its just what happens.

So the best option would be to just talk to the program director about my situation? I am just afraid they would start looking for a person to fill my position before I was accepted into the other program.

If you are serious about transferring, your administration will eventually need to know as nearly all programs will require a letter indicating of good standing from your PD/Chair.

This type of situation happens and your PD should be relatively supportive as it is a legitimate reason for switching places.

Your program would not be able to advertise your position until you turn in a letter of resignation. You should contact the program you are interested in and see what is going on with that open position. Residents leave programs for this type of situation all the time. No program likes to lose a resident but they will/or should be supportive of your decision. If you have a good relationship with your current PD, then talk to him/her about it. Just give your current program notice as soon as possible if you accept the other position.

As others have posted, this happens all the time. When I was an intern, one of my co-interns decided to get back together with her bf (they broke up right before the interview season) in another state. Furthermore, she switched from ob to IM. She was upfront with the PD from day 1. Most programs will need a letter from your PD and assurance that you are not doing this before the program's back. This will also give your program ample amount of time to fill the position.

I am in the same position. I am a PGY 1 (soon to be PGY 2) in Chicago and my significant other of 5 years just matched in New York City. I have been up front with my program director and chair and they have been supportive, asking only that I let them know if and when I find a spot so they can find someone else. Where are you trying to go and where are you know?

hey guys,

I am on the same boat. I am PGY1 in NYC and wanting to match at a program in boston because my significant other is there. Other than the CREOG clearinghouse, are there other sites showing openings?

Bumping!
I'm in a similar position as others, a PGY1 hoping to move across the country to be with my husband who hasn't found work near me.

Were you guys successful with your moves?

I check the creog clearinghouse regularly hoping that something will come up. I see the posts ask for your ERAS, where do you get that? is that the one we created as medical students? Also when is a good time to tell your current program that you're looking to leave?

yes, the ERAS application is the one you filled out as a medical student. this can be obtained from your current program. the new program will require updated LORs etc as well. good luck.
